Ayala Land expands Visayas retail footprint with Ayala Malls Gatewalk, anchored by IKEA

Mandaue City — Ayala Malls today announced a major expansion of its retail footprint in the Visayas with the opening of Ayala Malls Gatewalk, a 56,000-square-meter mall and lifestyle destination located within Ayala Land’s master-planned Gatewalk estate in Mandaue City.

Set to open in December 2026, Ayala Malls Gatewalk will be a four-level, air-conditioned complex connected to an office tower and a public transport hub. Designed to serve Cebu’s growing residential, office, and visitor markets, the mall will bring together retail, dining, entertainment, and community spaces within one integrated development.

Ayala Malls Gatewalk will be anchored by IKEA, marking the Swedish home furnishings retailer’s first store in Cebu and the wider Visayas. Spanning around 4,000 square meters, IKEA will offer its full range of well-designed, functional, and affordable home solutions to one of the country’s most dynamic regional markets.

The mall will also feature a strong line-up of global and local brands, including new dining formats, a Shopwise supermarket, and two regular cinemas. Its design will include a central outdoor courtyard with a playful large-scale feature, as well as the ARTrium, an interactive digital art hallway from the main entrance.

DCPO charges 8 in Buhangin mall heist; arrested suspect linked to ₱100-M jewelry robbery

THE DAVAO City Police Office (DCPO) has formally filed robbery charges against eight at-large suspects behind the April 11 shopping mall hold-up in Buhangin, while tracking down a key suspect tied to an active organized crime syndicate.

Following an extensive case build-up by investigators from Buhangin Police Station (PS5), a criminal complaint for robbery with the use of firearm was submitted to the Office of the City Prosecutor under docket number INV-26-E-1169.

Joint law enforcement units arrested one of the key suspects, identified by the alias Dadang, during a tracker operation at the Molave Bus Terminal in Barangay Maloloy-on, Molave, Zamboanga del Sur.

Dadang, a resident of Molave, was arrested by virtue of an outstanding warrant for separate robbery, theft, and illegal firearms charges.

Intelligence briefs released by DCPO chief Col Peter Bauzon Madria link the captured suspect to the notorious Tolentino Criminal Gang , a syndicate containing remnants of the defunct Ozamiz organized crime group.

The ₱100-million connection

Investigators disclosed that “Dadang” was heavily involved in the February 26, 2025 heist at Hanna’s Pawnshop along Illustre Street, Davao City.

That operation netted the syndicate an estimated ₱100 million worth of stolen jewelry.

The suspect’s criminal profile included:

  • Robbery & Firearms Violations: Subject to a ₱100,000 recommended bail under Criminal Case No. R-DVO-25-01317-CR for violations of the Revised Penal Code and Republic Act No. 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act).
  • Theft Charges: Subject to a ₱10,000 recommended bail under Criminal Case No. 3636.Madria commended the inter-unit coordination that led to the out-of-town arrest.

The DCPO assured the public that tracker teams are actively conducting follow-up operations to capture the remaining eight at-large suspects from the Buhangin mall incident.

  • BFP to verify inspection records as fire guts shopping mall

THE DAVAO City Fire District reported approximately P48 million in property damage after a blaze gutted approximately 600 square meters of floor space at Gaisano Grand Citygate Mall in Buhangin on Friday afternoon, Jan. 2.

According to Fire Senior Inspector Frances Mae Sendrijas, spokesperson for the Davao City Fire District, the incident began around 3:16 p.m. and reached the third alarm before being declared under control at 6:15 p.m. 

Firefighters officially declared “fire out” at 7:05 pm.

While the investigation into the cause is ongoing, Sendrijas confirmed that the damage was concentrated on the ground and second floors—affecting one tenant each—while nearly half of the third floor was destroyed.

No casualties or injuries were reported.

When asked about the mall’s last fire safety inspection, Sendrijas stated that the information is still being verified.

“As of this moment, I cannot give exact details as we need to verify this with our Fire Safety Enforcement Branch, which handles the documents for business establishments in Davao City,” Sendrijas said. “Hopefully, by next week, we will have that information.”

She added that the Fire Safety Enforcement Branch is currently coordinating with investigators to review the building’s compliance documents as part of the final investigation report.

Mall statement 

“Our emergency response team, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Davao City Central 911 emergency response center, fire brigade volunteers, and other relevant authorities immediately responded and successfully contained the situation.

“We are grateful for their swift and professional action.

“All employees, customers, and occupants were safely evacuated following established safety protocols.

“We are awaiting the final investigation report from the authorities as to the initial cause of the fire.”

The mall management assured that the safety and well-being of its employees, partners, and customers remain its top priority.

“We are working to be ready to serve our valued customers again as soon as possible,” the statement said.

NCCC Ma-a to open ground level in October 2025

HOMEGROWN retail giant NCCC Mall-Ma-a branch is set to open its ground level to the public in October 2025, an official said.

Alice Romero, NCCC Malls marketing manager, revealed this development during the Business Forum at Ahfat Seafood Plaza, NCCC-Victoria Plaza on Friday.

“We are looking at October this year to open the ground floor tenants,” Romero said to expect big brands such as Jollibee, Kenny Rogers, and Dairy Queen, among others.

The ground floor has a projected capacity of 60-80 tenants, from the total accommodation of 200 tenants for all its floors, including business units.

Meanwhile, the upper floors are also set to open in December 2025. Last December 20, 2024, its supermarket was opened to the public in time for the Christmas season.

The mall is still under construction but has a total of 28,200.64 square meters, four floors, and one basement parking.

Amenities of the mall include a supermarket, retail spaces, cinema, department store, amusement, bowling, multipurpose hall, dog park, food court and a chapel within the al fresco roof deck.

It will have two main entrances, one in MacArthur Highway side and the other in Ma-a side, and features 800 basement parking slots to cater to mallgoers.
