THE NEWLY opened temporary bridge in Barangay Callawa is only for light vehicles, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) XI announced on Wednesday, July 15.
To note, DPWH XI opened to vehicular traffic on Sunday afternoon, July 12, 2026.
The bridge was constructed almost a month after the Callawa Bridge collapsed on May 19, 2026, due to severe flooding caused by the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and the easterlies.
“Ginapahibalo sa publiko nga ang temporaryong Bailey Bridge sa Brgy. Callwa, Davao City mahimong agian lamang sa light vehicles,” DPWH-Davao said in a press release on Wednesday.
The agency said the heavy vehicles can pass through a temporary access road adjacent to the Bailey Bridge.
“Giawhag ang tanang motorista ug mga byahero nga motuman sa mga balaod sa trapiko aron malikayan ang aksidente ug mapadayon ang maayong kondisyon sa temporaryong tulay,” the agency stressed.
The 15-meter Callawa bridge was constructed in 2017, connecting Barangay Tigatto and Barangay Fatima.
DPWH XI spokesperson Dean Ortiz, in an earlier report, said that the bridge collapsed due to heavy rains and years of erosion that affected the creek underneath.
Ortiz said the Bailey Bridge will be a temporary access for residents, but a new permanent bridge design with a budget will be proposed for the 2027 General Appropriations Act.
