MDW assures stable water supply amid projected El Niño

METRO Dumaguete Water (MDW) has assured residents of a stable and reliable water supply as the country braces for the effects of a projected El Niño this year.

The assurance comes after recent monitoring of the water table showed that Dumaguete City continues to benefit from a robust groundwater source, even under prolonged dry conditions.

“Our latest data shows healthy groundwater levels despite extended dry periods,” said MDW chief operating officer Engr. Robert R. Cabiles. While current capacity remains sufficient, he emphasized the importance of public cooperation in sustaining supply.

Consumers are urged to practice responsible water use and promptly report leaks, noting that small, collective actions can significantly protect the city’s resources. “Every reported leak and mindful use of water help safeguard our supply for the greater Dumaguete community,” Cabiles said.

To further strengthen supply reliability, MDW inaugurated Pumping Station 22 last year, adding at least three million liters per day (MLD) to the city’s water system. The facility serves as an additional buffer, particularly during periods of high demand and reduced rainfall. Since its operations in 2021, MDW has already invested some Php350million worth of CAPEX projects to improve service quality and expand system capacity.

The company continues to invest in infrastructure improvements aimed at long-term sustainability. Its capital expenditure program this year includes pipelaying, pipe upsizing, and the development of another pumping station. For 2026 onwards, the company is preparing to further expand its investments costing at least P204 million in capital expenditure projects.

“Our strategic investments are designed to strengthen the entire network and ensure operational resilience,” Cabiles added. “These measures position us to better manage challenges, including the looming El Niño.”

Metro Dumaguete Water is a joint venture between the Dumaguete City Water District and Metro Pacific Water, a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation. The company began managing the city’s water system in February 2021.
