THE DAVAO City Police Office (DCPO) has issued a stern warning to the public, reminding residents that pointing a laser beam or any high-intensity light at an aircraft is a serious criminal offense punishable by up to three years in prison and significant fines.
Acting city director Colonel Mannan C. Muarip said the reckless act endangers the safety of pilots, passengers, and people on the ground.
He cited Sec. 81 (b)(6) of the Civil Aviation Act of 2008, noting that offenders face imprisonment of up to three years and fines ranging from ₱50,000 to ₱500,000, or both.
Additional charges may also be filed if the act results in injury or property damage.
The warning, issued in coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), stresses that laser-pointing incidents pose grave risks to flight safety, particularly during critical phases like takeoff and landing when pilots require maximum focus.
Intense light from lasers can cause temporary blindness, glare, or disorientation, severely impairing a pilot’s ability to control the aircraft and significantly increasing the risk of accidents.
The DCPO clarified that such actions are considered a serious public safety concern and not merely a harmless prank.
Muarip urged the public to immediately report any instance of laser-pointing or suspicious light activity directed at aircraft, emphasizing that public cooperation is essential in maintaining air safety and preserving the city’s reputation.
