THE CHINESE Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Davao, led by Consul General Zhao Xiuzhen, celebrated the country’s 76th founding anniversary on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the SMX Convention Center.

The event highlighted the deep and longstanding relationship between China and the Philippines, with both officials acknowledging a “shared future for humanity.”

In her remarks at the SMX Convention Center, Consul General Zhao Xiuzhen highlighted the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations with the Philippines.

She noted that over the past 76 years, China has lifted over 800 million people out of poverty, achieving its poverty alleviation goals.

Zhao also cited several China-supported projects in the Philippines, including:

  • The Panhua Integrated Steel Plant in Maasim, Sarangani, with a $1 billion investment.
  • The cultivation of hybrid rice in Mindanao and the export of durian from Davao to China.
  • The Davao River Bridge, which has been completed, and the ongoing Davao-Samal Bridge construction.

“Currently, China-Philippines relations face severe challenges,” Consul General Zhao acknowledged. However, she emphasized that “only by seeking common ground while reserving differences” can cooperation proceed smoothly and contribute to regional peace and stability.

Meanwhile, Acting Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte extended his greetings, underscoring the strong bonds between the two nations.

He commended the Chinese Consulate for its partnership, which has benefited both communities in areas such as economic development, tourism, and cultural exchange.

“This momentous occasion not only recognizes China’s rich history, but also serves as a testament to the strong ties you have fostered with neighboring countries, including the Philippines,” Duterte said.

He also expressed his hope for a future of “shared progress, mutual respect, and lasting friendship between Davao City and the People’s Republic of China.”
