TikTok Shop, IPOPHL reinforce commitment to brand protection and safer online shopping

TIKTOK Shop reinforced its commitment to protecting intellectual property rights (IP) through its latest IP Bootcamp in partnership with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL). The session brought together brand owners, rights holders, and platform partners for practical discussions on strengthening IP protection in the digital marketplace.

The session featured updates on TikTok Shop’s Intellectual Property Protection Center (IPPC), insights from IPOPHL on the Philippines’ IP enforcement landscape, and a panel discussion with TikTok Shop Mall brand partners on how stronger IP protection supports business growth in the digital marketplace.

The IP Bootcamp coincides with National Intellectual Property Month, underscoring the role of IP in fostering trust, innovation, and a more secure e-commerce ecosystem.

Strengthening trust through proactive IP protection

For TikTok Shop, intellectual property protection remains central to creating a safe and trusted shopping experience for both consumers and businesses, especially as the online commerce landscape continues to evolve.

“Safety is at the core of how we operate on TikTok Shop, as a marketplace only thrives when it is built on authenticity,” said Yves Gonzalez, head of public policy for the Philippines at TikTok Shop. “When a consumer clicks ‘buy’ on the platform, they are also buying into the promise of a brand. Our responsibility is to help ensure that promise is protected through strong policies, proactive enforcement, and tools that empower rights holders to act in real time.”

Globally, between January and June 2025, more than 40 million products were proactively rejected from being listed on TikTok Shop for intellectual property rights (IPR) violations, while more than 2 million products were removed after being listed. Through its IPPC, TikTok Shop provides a one-stop integrated platform where rights holders and authorized representatives can register, monitor, and report suspected IP infringements more efficiently. By equipping businesses with more direct and accessible tools to protect their brands, TikTok Shop aims to help rights holders respond faster to violations and focus on growth, innovation, and customer engagement.

Supporting brands and business growth on TikTok Shop Mall

The IP Bootcamp also highlighted how stronger IP safeguards can help brands grow with greater confidence online, particularly on TikTok Shop Mall, where shoppers can access a curated selection of local and international brands with 100% authentic and original products.

During the panel discussion, TikTok Shop Mall brand partners shared how trust, authenticity, and platform support have helped them strengthen their presence and connect with highly engaged audiences through content-driven discovery. The conversation also highlighted how stronger IP protection can create tangible commercial value by helping businesses protect brand equity, reduce counterfeit-related risks, and participate more confidently in digital commerce.

A continuing partnership for safer and smarter online shopping

TikTok Shop’s partnership with the IPOPHL includes the co-development of educational content under the #TikTokShopSmart initiative, designed to help both consumers and sellers better understand how to identify counterfeit goods, protect intellectual property, and shop more safely online.

For consumers, this includes practical, easy-to-follow guidance on spotting fake products and making more informed purchase decisions, while seller-focused content highlights tools such as TikTok Shop’s IPPC, and how rights holders can better safeguard their brands on the platform.

MDPPA holds product, branding seminar to help curb fake motorcycle parts

THE MOTORCYCLE Development Program Participants Association, Inc. (MDPPA) recently held two major events last November 4 aimed at strengthening consumer protection and forecasting industry growth as the Philippine motorcycle sector continues to expand.

The first event was a product and branding seminar held at the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) Multi-Purpose Hall in McKinley Hill, Taguig City, designed primarily to capacitate the national coalition for the Intellectual Property Rights (NCIPR) Enforcers, whose members include delegates from NBI, PNP, PNP-DILG, BOC, & DTI.

At the same time, it also aims to equip employees of MDPPA member brands and other stakeholders with the tools and knowledge to help them differentiate genuine motorcycle parts from counterfeit ones.

Citing the increasing circulation of counterfeit motorcycle components, especially on e-commerce platforms, and how it poses a direct threat to rider safety and product reliability, MDPPA said the seminar was designed to empower motorcycle stakeholders with knowledge that will aid them in curbing the proliferation of fake parts.

“Being able to tell what’s genuine and what’s counterfeit is not just about brand protection. It’s about making sure that every Filipino rider gets home safe, and this seminar reinforces that commitment, aligning with the objectives of MDPPA’s Tropang MAALAM,” said Erwin Estrada, Vice President of MDPPA, in his welcome remarks.

Later in the day, MDPPA convened a press conference where it presented its sales forecast for the remainder of 2025 as well as its early projections for 2026.

From January to September 2025, MDPPA has recorded a total of 1,398,314 motorcycle units sold nationwide. The association also expects over 395,000 additional units to be sold between October and December, bringing the 2025 year-end total to 1,793,219 units, a 6.7 percent increase from the 1,681,482 units sold within the same period in 2024.

Looking ahead to next year, MDPPA is projecting a continued upward trajectory with a forecast of 4 percent in terms of industry growth, pushing projected 2026 sales past the 1.85-million mark.

“We remain optimistic, especially as motorcycles continue to be the go-to mobility option for Filipinos due to their affordability, fuel-efficiency, how easy they are to maintain, and how they can get through traffic faster, which are all real, everyday needs we’re addressing,” said Alex Cumpas, president of MDPPA.

The press conference also served as the launchpad for MDPPA’s “No to Counterfeit” Campaign, a nationwide initiative aimed at raising awareness on the dangers of counterfeit motorcycle parts by promoting product integrity, reinforcing public safety, and encouraging responsible purchasing behavior.

“This campaign is for every rider who deserves peace of mind. Counterfeit parts are more than just low quality, they can put lives at risk, which is why we’re calling on everyone to help us build a safer, more honest motorcycle industry,” said Cumpas.

Globe Backs Site Blocking to Protect Filipino Creativity and Strengthen the Local Creative Economy

Following the recent move of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) asking internet service providers to block piracy streaming sites, Globe is calling for the immediate passage of a site blocking law that will make these efforts legally enforceable and sustainable.

Filipino creativity fuels one of the country’s most dynamic industries, spanning film, music, gaming, animation, design, and digital content. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) projects that the creative economy could contribute up to ₱2 trillion to the country’s output this year, underscoring its growing role in national development. Yet online piracy continues to erode this progress, depriving creators and businesses of fair income while exposing consumers to scams, malware, and identity theft.

“Every time someone streams or downloads illegally, we steal opportunity from our future,” said Globe President and CEO Carl Cruz. “If we want Filipino talent to shine globally, we must protect their work at home.”

Globe complies with IPOPHL’s administrative site blocking requests issued under the Memorandum of Understanding on Voluntary Site Blocking, where telecommunications operators agree to cooperate in restricting access to piracy websites. It has acted on IPOPHL’s requests to block 24 infringing sites identified under the agency’s enforcement actions.

However, Globe emphasized that the current framework remains voluntary and lacks the permanence and enforcement power of legislation. The company is urging lawmakers in the 20th Congress to refile and pass a site blocking law that would formally empower IPOPHL to order telecommunications operators to disable access to piracy websites.

“IPOPHL’s leadership and collaboration with industry are critical steps forward, but we need the law to make these actions sustainable and enforceable,” Cruz said. “A clear legal mandate will protect Filipino creators, strengthen investor confidence, and ensure consumers are safe online.”

Globe has long supported anti-piracy initiatives through education campaigns, partnerships with content providers, and cooperation with government agencies. As one of the country’s leading telecommunications operators, Globe reiterated its readiness to implement site blocking orders once IPOPHL is granted full authority by law.

“Protecting Filipino creativity is protecting our livelihood, our culture, and our reputation as a source of world-class talent,” Cruz added. “By standing united against piracy, we give our creators the chance to thrive and the nation a stronger creative future.”
