THIS SPACE has been silent for a while, but we will strive to make up for lost time.
Last Wednesday, we greeted the first day of October in Barangay Marahan, Marilog District, captivated by the first light shining on the vast sea of clouds suspended in the valley below. Curious as to how a sea of clouds is formed, we found that it is generally found in valleys or over seas in very stable air mass conditions. The Japan Tourism Organization offers a beautiful explanation: “The morning chill causes mist to rise in the mountains, forming fluffy clouds that flow through the valley like streams of silk.”
We had previously made arrangements with Ricardo Obenza Jr., a respected environmentalist and Datu Bago Awardee, to visit his haven. The Marahan Botanical Garden offers a much-needed sanctuary—a place to refresh, recharge, and truly absorb what nature has to offer. The entrance is a brief pause in the line of vegetable stalls, marked by a small wooden sign welcoming trekkers. It’s easily missed, but the effort to find it is richly rewarded; perhaps its hidden quality is one of its unique charms.
The trail proved to be a wonderful walk, despite the residual mud from the previous night’s rain. Stepping beneath the dense canopy of trees instantly had the effect of lifting any worries that had been locked on our shoulders. We could breathe easier immediately as a profound sense of peace washed over us. Even with the uncertainty of the trail’s destination or the challenges we might face, the trek was delightful, especially punctuated by the easy banter of our group of journalists. They, in particular, should be grateful that technology has advanced to the point where all their filming equipment fits into a single backpack, a stark contrast to the days of lugging heavy cameras, tripods, and computers.
We were graciously welcomed by Dodz Roxas, who met us before we reached the entrance—a gem who serves as both a knowledgeable guide and a passionate environmentalist.
Dodz drew our attention to freshly planted, endemic saplings secured by protective sticks. He shared that some individuals who participate in tree-planting mistakenly uproot these fragile specimens. Throughout the mountains, various endemic trees, including Lauaan, Narra, and Yakal (all hardwood species), were randomly finding their footing and their space in the forest.
In a ubiquitous sign upon entering the seminar hall, we read the message: “One finds it hard to maintain a small garden; what more if you’re maintaining a small forest! Preserving the forest is no big deal as long as you have the desire to make a change and make the world a better place to live in.” No truer words have been said.
Obenza’s goal is “to regenerate forest biodiversity for the ecological sustainability of humans and other living organisms.” And this can be done through continuous planting of trees, plants, herbs, and other things that can take root in the soil, in water, or even air.
He argues there is no reason not to plant for food or greenery, even in the smallest spaces. For those living in a condo, he suggested that various herbs and vegetables can thrive in small pots. He views this not only as a hobby but as one of the best ways to ensure food security. His experience during the COVID-19 pandemic reinforced the critical lesson of growing your own food, and it even helped him discover edible species previously thought to be useless.
Obenza believes that planting should be a fundamental habit. Now 82 years old, he remains dedicated, continuing to visit the botanical garden to care for his plants and assist environmental groups, schools, and civic organizations keen on saving the environment.
“If we plant, I found that water comes,” he said. This entire area was once heavily logged, and when he first arrived in the 1970s, the land was dry and largely barren, dotted only by dried saplings planted without proper intent or simply for compliance. There were also invasive species that he had to meticulously remove to allow for the land’s proper regeneration.
We are all aware of the impact of humanity’s careless exploitation of our planet Earth. Initiatives by environmentalists across the globe to mitigate the ill effects of climate change have begun to make a tangible difference, one example being the recent report that the ozone layer is starting to improve. However, Davao City, a rapidly growing metropolis, faces its own distinct challenges. The fast-paced construction of private infrastructure, the rapid development of real estate encroaching upon former agricultural lands, and the toll all these factors take on the environment are matters we must seriously consider.
PH motorcycle industry maintains upward growth in first 8 months of 2025
THE COUNTRY’S motorcycle industry continues to ride strong through 2025, with the latest data from the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association, Inc. (MDPPA) pointing to robust year-on-year growth for unit sales in the first eight months of the year.
In August 2025 alone, the industry recorded 158,228 units sold, an 18.4 percent jump compared to the 133,689 units sold in the same month last year. Overall sales from January to August of this year are now at 1,227,160 units, up by 11.8 percent from 1,098,056 units recorded during the same period in 2024.
This consistent growth in sales is largely attributed to the sustained demand for motorcycles in the country, as Filipinos continue to turn to these vehicles as a practical and affordable mobility solution, especially for navigating increasingly congested roads.
Earlier this year, MDPPA shared a forecast projecting a five percent overall growth for 2025, fueled by “strong consumer demand, expanding delivery and mobility services, and the appeal of motorcycles as a practical mobility option.”
Automatic motorcycles remain the top choice among Filipino buyers, with sales for August 2025 reaching 106,382 units, up 24.8 percent from 85,212 units in August 2024. Mopeds are also among the most in-demand among consumers, with 21,805 units sold in August 2025, up by 3 percent from 21,177 in the same period last year. Business motorcycles also recorded strong growth with 26,399 units sold in August 2025, up by 14.4 percent versus 23,080 units from the same month last year.
The Other categories that include Street Models (standard/naked bikes, cruisers, sport, or touring models, or simply units that are commonly used or built for everyday riding), Big Bikes, Off-Road, 3 Wheeler, and Electric had a total of 3,642 units sold in August 2025 compared to 4,220 in August 2024, a difference of 578 units or 13.7 percent.
“Despite declines in some segments, the industry as a whole remains in a healthy position, and we are confident that the broad appeal of motorcycles will continue to drive demand moving forward,” said Engr. Alexander A. Cumpas, MDPPA president. “This positive growth trajectory is a testament to the enduring relevance and growing importance of motorcycles in the everyday lives of Filipinos, underscoring a resilient and evolving industry.”
WAKEYPEDIA, that know-it-all and pretender to Google’s throne, briefly describes the dog breed Shih Tzu as “having a very people-oriented, housebound personality.” Not satisfied, I continued further to know that they can, however, be very affectionate but stubborn, possess a happy disposition, but thrive on constant attention.
The yin and yang of doggos. In other words, and more importantly, spoiled. As such, this prima donna of the canine universe hates being alone. Well, that explains it then.
No, we don’t own one. My partner has had it with our 6-footer Snorkel, a mix of Dalmatian and Beagle, long ago. For one, because of his size, I was the only one who could walk him (which sadly wasn’t regular), and also because he had a penchant for chewing every footwear he came in contact with. Thus, when he died, the matey said, those reasons, plus the pain of the loss, were the end of it.
The Shih Tzu belonged to our neighbor. One late afternoon, as we arrived after a weekend visit to relatives in Gensan, the quiet was instantly broken by continuous yapping from an apparently new dog that stood by the fence we and our neighbor shared. Right away, as a peace offering to their pet, I threw a cookie across the barrier. A grave mistake.
It seemed that mutt took my gesture wrongly. Since that afternoon, he would bark nonstop in our direction and would only stop when I threw in whatever food bits we had. For a while, even, I found it amusing that he appeared to have grown hoarse from his incessant barking to get our attention.
Cross-examining myself in my mind, I constantly asked why I gave that pest (with a silent s) a second and nth serving in the first place. Answer? I couldn’t do anything in the house anymore, with his bark drilling into my head. While food quieted him for a few hours, whenever he sensed our presence, it was back to square one. Many a time, I found myself going to the bedroom to write my articles because the dining table had simply become an unbearable place to do things.
During some nights, my partner and I have discussed my constant irritation, and she always insisted that I should just not let the dog spoil my day. Her ‘dogs will be dogs’ reasoning doesn’t sit well with me, even though (don’t get me wrong), I love dogs. Not just this particular one.
During my self-cross, I, of course, thought of talking to the owner whom I’ve known for more than twenty years of residency. It’s just that years ago, I also complained about one of their dogs that always got out and terrorized passers-by. I didn’t want to sound like an overly complaining kapitbahay, so that’s it. A never-ending dog day for me and my little tormentor. If you’re asking if there’s a closure to this tale. For one, I’ve already surrendered to my fate. I’m thinking of buying dog food next time.

Magenta Moves: EastWest Rural Bank’s program for teacher wellness and learner protection
MAGENTA Moves is EastWest Rural Bank’s (EWRB) initiative that champions both teacher wellness and learner protection. Designed as a continuous program that supports educators while contributing to safe learning spaces, Magenta Moves was launched with A Day for Teacher Wellness, a Zumba-for-a-cause activity held at Davao City National High School during National Teachers’ Month in September.
The launch event brought together hundreds of teachers and education leaders in a celebration of health and community service. For every participant, EWRB pledged a Php 100 donation to the Department of Education’s Learner Rights and Protection Office (LRPO), ensuring that each dance step contributed to the advocacy of creating safe and nurturing learning environments for Filipino students.
A total of 671 DepEd teachers and staff joined the activity together with 33 EWRB employees who shared in the energy of the event.
“Magenta Moves is our way of celebrating educators while also supporting the vital work of the LRPO in protecting Filipino learners,” said Sheila Marasigan Bajado, President of EastWest Rural Bank.
The LRPO plays a key role in ensuring that every student is free from abuse, discrimination, bullying, and other forms of violence in schools. By supporting LRPO, EWRB stands in solidarity with teachers and DepEd officials in upholding safe, inclusive, and nurturing education environments.

The event was attended by key officials from the Department of Education, including Josie T. Bolofer (Assistant Schools Division Superintendent), Jonito O. Galan (Public Schools District Supervisor), Evelyn Magno (School Head – Davao City National High School), and Jonas Piore (Education Program Supervisor/Division Partnership Focal).
Representing EWRB were Sheila Marasigan Bajado (President) and Senior Leaders Hera A. Duka, Gerard Loni Duque, Zaldy Peter Calicdan, and Region 11 Area Head Alexis Durilag.
Through music and a common purpose, Magenta Moves was yet another celebration of meaningful, learner-centered initiatives and teacher welfare, a direct reflection of its core mission to nurture people and respond to community needs.
