NUSTAR Golf 2025 Draws Over 120 Players in Cebu Invitational Tournament
Cebu City, Philippines – The NUSTAR Golf Tournament 2025 wrapped up on a high note at the scenic Alta Vista Golf and Country Club on July 25, 2025, following a full day of competitive play.
The tournament gathered over 120 players from Cebu, across the Philippines, and abroad, with a mix of top amateur golfers and invited professionals. Played in a 2-man scramble format with sequential tee-offs, the event provided an exciting and inclusive competition experience for all participants.
Emerging as champions in Division I were Jung Su Park and Nam Deok Yi, who clinched the top spot by countback after finishing with a 61. They were followed closely by first runners-up Rico Rey Holganza and Grace Quintanilla, also with a 61, and second runners-up Marlo Cugtas and Jung Bum Woo with a 62. In Division II, Kevin Charles dela Cerna and Jan Piolo Obial took the championship with a net 67, while Sang Min Ju and Soo Man Lee secured first runner-up honors by countback over Gerrald Tan and Mon Bonilla, both pairs posting a 69.
Special awards were also handed out for the Fun Holes. Ricky Libago won Nearest to the Pin on Hole #2 with a shot landing just 3 feet 11 inches from the cup. Charles Francis Tiu recorded the Longest Drive on Hole #10 with a powerful 320-yard drive. Marlo Cugtas claimed the Most Accurate Drive on Hole #11, and Kwang Il Park holed the Longest Putt on Hole #18, sinking it from 31 feet.

“The NUSTAR Golf Tournament 2025 is more than just a tournament, it’s our way of bringing together the people who matter the most to us. Not in the boardroom or ballroom, but out in the fairway, under the sun and the wind in an environment that’s both relaxed and rewarding,” said NUSTAR Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Sean Knights.
Off the course, participants enjoyed a full program of side activities including a welcome reception, sponsor exhibits, and a festive awards ceremony. These events highlighted NUSTAR’s dedication to supporting sports tourism and elevating luxury lifestyle experiences in Cebu.
THE PHILIPPINE Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) signed a memorandum of agreement to promote the PhilHealth YAKAP among the Philippine workforce.
Led by PhilHealth Acting CEO Dr. Edwin M. Mercado and Labor Secretary Bienvenido E. Laguesma — with Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs Secretary Frederick Go and DOLE Undersecretary Benjo Santos M. Benavidez as witnesses, this initiative aims to enhance workers’ access to primary care.
As of June 4, 2025, over 386,000 employees all over the country are expected to benefit from the program.
The PhilHealth YAKAP is an enhanced primary care benefit package providing coverage for consultations, indicated laboratory and cancer screening tests, and prescribed essential medicines designed to promote prevention and early disease detection to help curb financial hardship for the members.
The MOA cements the commitment of both agencies to work together in expanding primary care services through information campaigns, capacity-building activities, and strategic engagement with employers, industry groups, and labor organizations.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed strong support for the initiative, emphasizing that the partnership between DOLE and PhilHealth reflects the administration’s vision for a Bagong Pilipinas where every Filipino worker is empowered, protected, and provided with essential healthcare services.

Globe reaffirms commitment to cooperate with Marcos administration for GIDA development
Globe reiterates its commitment to support President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s call to bring inclusive development to Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs), following the priorities laid out in the 2025 State of the Nation Address.
In his speech, the President spoke of the continued challenges in remote areas where internet access, reliable electricity, and public services remain out of reach. He pointed out that around 12,000 public schools are still without internet and recognized that while free WiFi sites have grown to nearly 19,000 nationwide, this is still far from enough. He also emphasized the need to strengthen the National Fiber Backbone initiative and provide real access for people in the farthest corners of the country.
“We share the President’s vision to create a future where every Filipino can participate in the digital economy,” said Carl Cruz, Globe President and CEO. “We’ve seen firsthand how critical it is to connect even the most remote communities. It’s not just about putting up cell sites. It’s about giving people a fair shot at education, healthcare, safety, and livelihood.”
The Philippines recently moved up four spots in the 2025 Connectivity Index, as reported by The Economist Intelligence Unit. The improvement shows that various efforts from the telco sector to expand internet availability and affordability are gaining ground. The price of internet services continue to go down on a cost per GB basis. Internet access is also increasing because of continuous builds each year.
However, the country continues to face challenges in access and infrastructure especially in remote areas. As many communities remain unconnected, the goal of providing internet for every Filipino is a work in progress.
“Clearly there are still gaps that we need to address,” said Cruz. “User density per site needs to improve so that quality of service will also improve.”
Globe points out that the sector’s ongoing work with the government to roll out the Bayanihan SIM is a clear path to solving portions of the digital divide. “This is one area where government assistance is put to bear,” said Cruz. “By working together, we’re able to get connectivity tools directly into the hands of those who need them most, especially in public schools and disadvantaged communities.”
The Bayanihan SIM initiative, launched in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), provides SIM cards preloaded with 25GB of free monthly data. With the entire telco industry onboard, the program aims to benefit a million individuals nationwide.
Globe’s pilot rollout was held at Kalawakan Elementary School in Doña Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan, where students, teachers, and parents in a GIDA community received free SIMs with ready-to-use data. This initiative complements Globe’s broader infrastructure efforts to reach more GIDAs and expand access where it’s needed most.
In 2024, Globe also deployed 51 solar-powered cell sites in off-grid areas where power lines have yet to arrive. These new sites are now delivering mobile service to places that had long been disconnected, supporting daily learning, communication, and access to public services. By combining on-the-ground infrastructure with meaningful, data-enabled access, Globe is helping advance the President’s vision of a more connected and inclusive Philippines.
To accelerate rollout in GIDAs, Globe works closely with local governments to streamline permitting and gain community support. Through its partnership with DICT, the company has also activated free public WiFi in libraries and schools in underserved municipalities.
Support for students and teachers extends beyond connectivity. Globe has distributed LTE pocket WiFi devices, SIMs with free data, and Globe At Home Prepaid WiFi kits in schools with limited access to digital tools. In addition, its KonekTayo WiFi service brings affordable, load-based internet to low-income households in remote communities.
These initiatives align with the government’s efforts to modernize education, strengthen disaster preparedness, expand e-governance, and bring digital inclusion to every region. Globe also continues to advocate for building reforms that can support long-term connectivity, such as the inclusion of dedicated telco rooms in new buildings, one canal policy and ease of doing business.
Globe remains committed to being a reliable partner in nation-building, working alongside government and communities to build a future where access to digital services is no longer a privilege, but a basic right for every Filipino.
Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (CeMAP) Hosts 2025 ACPAC 71st Annual Meeting in Manila
Manila — The Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (CeMAP) proudly welcomed the cement industry leaders and delegates from across Asia for the 2025 gathering of the 71st Asia Cement Producers Amity Club (ACPAC), held last week in Manila. Close to 90 delegates attended the event, which focused on promoting best practices and sustainability in the industry.

ACPAC, composed of member associations from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines, serves as a collaborative platform for sharing innovation, market trends, addressing shared challenges to address climate change, and common concerns in the industry, and reinforcing long-term harmony within the region.
In his Opening Address, CeMAP Chairperson Roberto Martin Gerardo Javier underscored the importance of the conference as a space to listen, learn, and lead together. To hear and learn from what each is doing in their respective countries – what’s working, what’s evolving, and where to collaborate.
DENR Undersecretary Joselin Marcus Fragada welcomed the delegates and delivered the Keynote Address, emphasizing responsible mining and sustainable practices such as the use of alternative raw materials and alternative fuels to mitigate the impact of climate change.
71st ACPAC Conference Chair and CeMAP President John Reinier Dizon also welcomed the delegates and delivered the Philippines’ Country Report, which highlighted market demand drivers, new capacities in the country, and challenges faced by the industry, notably the continuing imports despite current overcapacity.
Majority of the ACPAC members are also facing a slowdown of demand in their markets and facing low utilization. In Indonesia, for instance, the government imposed a moratorium on launching new cement capacity projects to partially mitigate the market slowdown and low utilization. Taiwan shared that they were able to secure antidumping duties on Vietnam exports in its country. Thailand shared the highlights of its Net Zero roadmap and encouraged other countries to follow.

“As we face regional volatility in demand, climate responsibility, rising energy costs and urban growth, ACPAC’s collaborative spirit is more vital than ever”, said Dizon.
The Manila meeting concluded with the handover to next year’s host country, Taiwan. There is a renewed commitment from member countries to work toward shared climate goals and strengthen the economic role of cement in nation-building across Asia.
CeMAP extends its gratitude to all member associations and participants for making this year’s ACPAC conference a resounding success.
BDO Unibank, Inc. (BDO) generated a net income of ₱40.6 billion in 1H 2025, up 3% from ₱39.4 billion last year, driven by strong performance from its core businesses. Earnings growth was tempered by the continuing investments in market coverage and IT spending for operational efficiency. Return on Average Common Equity (ROCE) stood at 13.9% for the period.
Net Interest Income increased by 7% as Gross Customer Loans climbed by 14% to ₱3.4 trillion, with broad-based growth across all market segments. Deposits also expanded by 8% to breach ₱4.0 trillion, with a Current Account/Savings Account (CASA) ratio of 69%.
Non-interest income grew by 15%, driven by the significant contributions from fee-based income and income from insurance operations.
Asset quality improved further, with Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio lower at 1.75%, and NPL coverage at 140%.
Shareholders’ equity strengthened by 12% on the back of profitable operations, with Book Value Per Share up by 12% to ₱113.04. The Bank’s Capital Ratio remained strong at 15.4%.
The Bank is set to issue its fourth ASEAN Sustainability Bonds on July 29, 2025 with a minimum aggregate issue size of ₱5 billion. Originally set to run from July 9 to 22, 2025, the strong demand from both retail and institutional investors prompted the early closing of the offer on July 14, 2025. The net proceeds will be used to finance and/or refinance eligible projects and further support the growth of the Bank’s sustainable portfolio.
Amid global uncertainties arising from geopolitical tensions and the imposition of US tariffs, the Philippines is expected to remain resilient, supported by its consumer-driven economy and sustained domestic demand. Likewise, the Bank remains well-positioned to manage emerging risks and capitalize on opportunities given its robust capital base and diversified business franchise.
SM Lanang Opens 1st Hakura Udon Branch

Hakura Udon, named after the combined Japanese words “White (白)” and “Sakura (桜)”, takes pride in its hand-pulled noodles that are crafted fresh daily.

Simmered with an umami-packed traditional dashi-based broth, Hakura Udon’s noodle dishes are one for the foodies who love to add personal flair to their choice of slurp-worthy delights as they can customize the toppings according to their liking.
Through this newest addition, SM Lanang brings the culinary excellence of Fukuoka, Japan’s “City of Noodles,” for devotees of traditional fare. THE UNION of Peoples’ Lawyers in Mindanao (UPLM) strongly condemns the Monday evening shooting in General Santos City of our former paralegal, Warren Cahayag.
Davao City – The Union of Peoples’ Lawyers in Mindanao (UPLM) strongly condemns the Monday evening shooting in General Santos City of our former paralegal, Warren Cahayag.
Cahayag, one of UPLM’s founding paralegal members in 2005, sustained five gunshot wounds after being attacked by riding-in-tandem assailants in Barangay Calumpang, General Santos City. He is currently under observation.
This act of violence occurred against a backdrop of relentless attacks against activists, lawyers–human rights defenders–both in the region and nationwide. These systematic assaults aim to create a chilling effect–sowing fear, silencing dissent, and paralyzing the vital work of those who serve the marginalized. They are designed to leave defenders exposed and vulnerable to attacks, fostering a dangerous climate of impunity.
Barely a month ago, on 23 June 2025, Ali Macalintal, a former human rights defender and also a former UPLM paralegal, was killed inside her spa in General Santos City.
We also remember our fallen fellow UPLM lawyer, Atty. Juan Macababbad, who was shot outside his house in Surallah, South Cotabato, on 15 September 2021. His case remains unresolved to date.
We call on the Marcos, Jr. administration to put an end to this senseless violence. His deliberate failure to acknowledge the continuing human rights violations in his fourth State of the Nation Address betrays a lack of serious commitment to human rights, sanctity of life, and the rule of law and justice.
We also call on the PNP, particularly Chief Nicolas Torre III, who hails from South Cotabato himself, to form a dedicated and credible special investigation task force to probe these attacks and ensure that not only the gunmen but also the masterminds are held accountable.
The families of the victims and the public deserve no less than this.
Stop the attacks! End impunity now!
