DAVAO health organizations are set to commence the annual World Kidney Day on Thursday, March 26, at SM Ecoland Annex in a bid to curb the rise in disease onset among young patients.
This year’s theme, “Kidney Health for all, protecting the planet, caring for the people,” underscores the importance of kidney wellness alongside environmental sustainability.
Dr. Aivan Wee, adult nephrologist at Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), stressed that patients undergoing dialysis are getting younger.
“Dialysis patients are getting younger nowadays. Illnesses we used to see mostly in older people, like high blood pressure and diabetes, are now also showing up in younger patients,” Wee said.
Wee reminded the public to maintain renal health by staying properly hydrated, avoiding salty foods, and limiting fatty food intake. Additionally, Wee urged the citizens to avoid self-medication through herbal remedies and improper use of pain relievers.
“It’s very important to stay hydrated and avoid dehydration. Try to limit salty foods and meat, because these are discouraged, especially when creatinine levels are high. Another common cause nowadays is the use of herbal medicines and frequent intake of pain relievers,” Wee said.
The event also includes various health screenings, such as laboratory and urine tests, intended for early detection of chronic kidney disease.
