5 ways to finally achieve your ‘New Year, new me’ health goals
MANILA – New Year’s resolutions: easy to make, even easier to break. One resolution we hear each year is resolving to live healthier – whether that means finally taking a diet seriously, joining more fun runs, or trying out a new fitness trend.
But if you’re juggling a full-time job, side hustles, social plans, and trying to make drastic changes to your lifestyle, it can quickly become overwhelming to maintain. A more realistic way to start is by making small, practical changes and adopting simple habits that can easily fit into your busy schedule. Here are five ways you can start today:
1. Eat balanced – not perfect
In 2026, it’s time to ditch fad diets and the pressure to eat perfectly three meals a day, seven days a week. Instead, shift your focus to eating well-balanced meals with a good mix of veggies, protein, and fiber. And if life forces you into a fast-food run, don’t stress—just reset at your next meal. Progress beats perfection every time.
2. Move your body, even if it’s just a little each day
Physical activity supports heart health and helps clear your mind to do better at work. You don’t need to spend hours at the gym just to be “active.” If you work long hours, you can focus instead on finding small pockets of time to move, such as taking a morning walk or doing a quick home workout. You can also join a dance or yoga class after work or play a sport you genuinely enjoy, because the movement you like is the one you’ll stick with.
3. Stay hydrated
Hydration is a simple but often forgotten habit when you’re rushing between meetings, client calls, or events. Water helps you stay sharp and energized, so keep a bottle with you and set reminders to drink throughout the day.
4. Make sleep a priority
Skipping sleep might feel like you’re getting more done, but it slows you down. When you prioritize getting more complete hours of sleep or achieving quality rest, you’ll be more prepared to face the workday.
5. Support your health with supplements made for a busy schedule
Some days, our schedules are nonstop, and having a simple supplement to support our health can make a difference. Santé Barley Max is a natural, easy, and affordable option.
Available in capsules or as pure barley powder, Santé Barley Max provides a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that benefit your body. Nordeco’s franchise renewal bid tone deaf to consumer sentiments
THE BILL seeking to renew the franchise of the Northern Davao Electric Cooperative (Nordeco) is tone deaf to the overwhelming clamor of the people of Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro.
Across social media, consumers have voiced legitimate frustrations over Nordeco’s inefficient services and exorbitant power rates. Instead of addressing these concerns, Nordeco dismisses them as “trolls,” silences critics by blocking accounts, or disables comment sections altogether. These are not trolls; they are real families and businesses struggling with unreliable service and rising costs.
Residents and entrepreneurs, particularly in the Island Garden City of Samal, have reported broken appliances, disrupted business operations, and livelihoods put at risk. These are everyday consequences of Nordeco’s failure to deliver dependable power.
The filing of House Bill 7006 by APEC Party-list Rep. Sergio Dagooc and PHILRECA Rep. Presley de Jesus only underscores where their priorities lie: protecting the interests of electric cooperatives rather than the consumers they are meant to serve. It should also be noted that lawmakers from Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro – Rep. Maricar Zamora, Rep. Jhong Ceniza, Rep. Oyo Uy, and Rep. JM Lagdameo – are not sponsoring this bill.
While the bill’s authors have long ties to electric cooperatives, they do not fully grasp the realities faced by consumers in Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro. Their focus should be on fixing the problems within their own cooperatives, which continue to face issues, rather than forcing another chance for Nordeco on communities that have already endured decades of poor service.
After years of broken promises, asking the public to give Nordeco “another chance” is an insult to households and businesses who have suffered enough. Consumers are tired. We have been promised improvement for far too long, yet the reality remains the same: high rates, poor service, and broken trust.
Lawmakers from Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro must stand with their constituents and reject this bill. As representatives of the people, they must listen to the voices of those who elected them. What consumers want is simple: affordable, reliable power services that support households and livelihoods. Anything less is unacceptable.

AUTHORITIES dismantled a suspected drug den and arrested three individuals during a targeted buy-bust operation in Barangay Zone 1 on Wednesday morning, Jan. 21.
The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) XI, in coordination with the Davao del Sur Provincial Police, conducted the sting at approximately 11:05 a.m. in Sitio Tacub.
Authorities identified the primary target as 23-year-old alias Gaw, the alleged maintainer of the facility.
The arrest was made after the suspect reportedly sold a 1.5-gram sachet of suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as shabu, to an undercover agent for ₱8,000.
Also apprehended during the raid were “Alias Giovanie,” a suspected employee of the den, and a visitor identified as “Alias Alnajer.”
During the subsequent search of the premises, PDEA agents recovered seven heat-sealed sachets containing roughly 25 grams of suspected shabu.
The seized illegal drugs have an estimated street value of ₱200,000.
Aside from the drugs, officers also recovered sachets with residue, various drug paraphernalia, and the marked buy-bust money.
The suspects are currently in custody and will face charges for violating sections 5, 6, 7, and 11 of Republic Act 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002).
Mayor Myrill Apit calls for stronger anti-bullying efforts in Mawab schools
MAWAB, Davao de Oro — Mayor Myrill Apit has intensified the Municipality of Mawab’s campaign against bullying, urging schools to strengthen their efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
Mayor Apit invited Department of Education (DepEd) District Coordinating Principal Rosario Angostura Noñeza and Mawab Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) head Ever Lucas for a discussion on the issue of bullying among learners.
Following the meeting, the Department of Education and the local government unit (LGU) of Mawab agreed to forge a partnership to develop programs that will protect students and promote a supportive school environment.
Mayor Apit emphasized that bullying will not be tolerated in the municipality.
“There is no room for bullying in Mawab. We will not allow any child to be afraid of going to school because of the harmful actions of others,” Mayor Apit said.
She also vowed to continue working closely with teachers and parents to stop bullying and ensure that cases are addressed promptly.
The action came after a reported incident involving a high school student who self-harmed due to depression, with bullying believed to have been a contributing factor.
- Coast Guard officer, 7 others relieved over capsized vessel
THE COMMANDER of the Coast Guard Sta. Ana Substation and seven personnel were directed to step down on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026, as the investigation deepened into the sinking of the MBCA Amejara and its still missing 15 crew members and passengers.
Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) deputy commander Macy A. Gabion announced the relief orders, stating that the personnel will be reassigned to the CGDSEM headquarters in Sasa pending the results of the probe.
“This is the verbal instruction of the district commander,” Gabion said on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026, at Sta. Ana Port in Davao City.
When asked about how motorbanca traveled from Sta. Ana Wharf to Governor Generoso, she replied: “This incident is strictly under investigation, and we cannot divulge specific details until the process is complete.”
She emphasized that while technical issues and passenger manifestos are critical to the inquiry, the command’s primary focus remains on the lives of the 15 individuals still missing at sea.
Regulatory scrutiny
The investigation is looking into the seaworthiness of the wooden vessel and whether it had a valid “permit to sail” given the rough sea conditions caused by Typhoon Ada.
When asked about the use of wooden boats on that route, Gabion clarified that while the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has the authority over wooden vessels, certifications are issued based on size and the ability to withstand currents.
“MARINA inspects the boat and determines passenger capacity and routes before issuing a certificate of public convenience,” Gabion said. “The Coast Guard’s role is to conduct a pre-departure inspection, but the master of the vessel is ultimately responsible for declaring the safe departure and seaworthiness of the craft.”
The PCG has vowed to make the results of the investigation public once concluded.
Search operations
The hunt for the 15 missing passengers has entered its fourth day, but authorities remain hopeful after deploying their floating and aerial assets from the CGDSEM, Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao (NFEM), Eastern Mindanao Command, and the Philippine Air Force.
Gabion noted that the lone survivor, Christopher Bulig, was located approximately 11 nautical miles from Sarangani Island.
To optimize the search, the PCG is utilizing the Search and Rescue Optimal Planning System (SAROPS).
“We use this system to determine the search area based on the last known location from Jan. 19. It ensures we do not waste logistics or personnel efforts in the vast waters,” Gabion explained.
International coordination
Lt. Commander Jerome Bryan Mauring, NFEM Public Affairs Office Chief, explained that the survivor was found swimming toward the Philippine borders rather than toward Indonesia.
However, because sea currents are moving southwest toward Indonesian territory, the Philippines has formally sought international assistance. A written request for search and rescue coordination was sent to the Indonesian Consul General on Jan. 21, 2026.
DAVAO social media personality Crist Briand, popularly known as Brader, finds himself in hot water again after being declared persona non grata in Bauang, La Union.
Bauang Vice Mayor Tanya Roberta de Guzman announced the resolution on her Facebook page.
“The Sangguniang Bayan of Bauang has officially declared blogger ‘Crist Briand’ as Persona Non Grata in the Municipality of Bauang, La Union,” the post said.
The SB of Bauang passed the resolution during its 30th regular session on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
The move came after the vlogger posted a video “mockingly calling” Bauang the home of Boang (crazy).
“The Sangguniang Bayan of Bauang, La Union emphasized that while they respect freedom of expression, they will not tolerate blatant disrespect toward the municipality and its people,” the vice mayor said.
The move is a call to be more responsible in using social media platforms.
“This formal declaration serves as a manifestation of the community’s shared displeasure and a firm stand against online harassment and misinformation,” she stressed.
In the video reposted by Facebook page Boss Rage, Brader said “Yo brothers and sisters, naa nako diri sa mga lugar sa mga boang, diri napud ko magpuyo bay sa mga boang balanse ra diri lets go boang,” while pointing at the gate arch of the municipality.
In September 2025, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) issued a show cause order to Briand over a “disrespectful” social media post making fun of the concept of Halal by referring to a so-called “baboy na Halal.”
Brader apologized and vowed to refrain from repeating similar acts, with future offenses to be dealt with accordingly.

EVERYONE spends their free time differently, and for many individuals, games of chance offer a refreshing escape from their daily routine. Games like poker, blackjack, and online slots provide excitement and a way to unwind after a busy day. But why do a lot of people enjoy testing their luck? Here’s a look at what draws players to these games to understand their lasting popularity.
They find joy in simple, accessible gameplay
Games of chance are easy to pick up. Many have simple rules and little barrier to entry, which makes them appealing to a wide range of players. Casino online games take this accessibility even further by enabling players to engage from home or on the go. The convenience and ease of play make these games a popular choice for those looking for entertainment that fits into their day. Beyond this, the straightforward nature of the gameplay makes it easy for anyone to enjoy these games at their own pace. Whether it’s a new or experienced player, the simple structure allows people to focus on having fun, letting them jump in quickly whenever they have time to spare.
They like the immersive atmosphere surrounding these games
The environment around these games adds to the excitement of the activity. Casinos, for instance, use bright lights, engaging sounds, and dynamic visuals to create a lively atmosphere that makes each visit special. Digital gaming platforms, on the other hand, replicate this experience through graphics and interactive features, such as animated reels, sound effects, and mini-games, that make players fully engaged. These elements work together to draw players into the games, making them feel involved and attentive throughout their session.
They revel in the thrill of risk-taking
Games of chance captivate players who are drawn to uncertainty and surprise. Each decision can lead to an unexpected outcome, creating a sense of suspense that keeps the mind fully engaged. This excitement comes from the tension between chance and choice, keeping players focused and emotionally invested. With every turn or hand carrying the possibility of a sudden change in fortune, each game brings dynamic energy that makes it compelling and memorable.
They find calm in engaging with these games
While some players enjoy the adrenaline rush games of chance bring, others appreciate how they allow them to slow down and focus. Paying attention to the mechanics and flow of the game provides a quiet, absorbing activity that helps clear the mind. The repetitive nature of certain actions, like watching cards being dealt or reels spinning, can also be surprisingly soothing and help ease tension. This sense of calm offers a break from daily stress and responsibilities, making gameplay a favored pastime for those seeking relaxation without sacrificing entertainment.
They take satisfaction in improving their skills
Players often enjoy the process of learning and refining their abilities. Understanding patterns, making strategic choices, and noticing subtle details gives a sense of accomplishment. Even small improvements feel rewarding and encourage continued engagement. The satisfaction that comes from knowing their own decisions and efforts influence how the game unfolds is enough to keep people coming back for more.
They enjoy the mental stimulation the games bring
These types of games engage players’ minds in a way that some activities can’t recreate. Each turn or decision encourages attention and quick thinking, keeping the brain active throughout play. Many players also enjoy spotting patterns, predicting outcomes, or weighing probabilities, even when no long-term strategy is involved. This mental engagement provides a stimulating break from routine tasks and everyday thoughts, making gameplay both entertaining and mentally invigorating.
They value the possibility of unexpected wins
The chance of an unanticipated reward gives players a sense of delight that goes beyond skill or strategy. Unexpected wins, no matter how small, can brighten the experience and make a session feel special. These moments create a sense of novelty and keep the gameplay from becoming routine or boring. Over time, the anticipation of these surprises adds a layer of enjoyment that complements the challenging aspects of the game, making each visit feel fresh and rewarding.
They benefit from the social side of gameplay
Games of chance create moments where people can connect naturally with those who enjoy the same activity. Being in the company with other players can bring energy to the experience, turning a simple game into a lively and memorable occasion. These social interactions can also strengthen bonds, where lighthearted competition creates a sense of community and camaraderie. For many, the opportunity to interact with others adds an extra layer of fun and keeps them coming back.
Games of chance offer more than just a way to pass the time. They provide moments of excitement, engagement, and connection that can brighten an ordinary day. The challenge and unpredictability of each session also keep players invested and eager to see what happens next. Moreover, the shared enjoyment creates experiences that are both entertaining and meaningful, leaving players with a sense of satisfaction and delight. It’s this unique blend that keeps players returning and makes these games so appealing.

COMMODORE Philipps Soria, commander of Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao, confirmed to TIMES on Wednesday evening that the search and rescue (SAR) operations are now concentrated south to southwest of Sarangani.
Using the SAROPS (Search and Rescue Optimal Planning System) application, the Coast Guard is projecting the movement of the 15 missing individuals based on real-time tide, wind, and current effects.
“Our SAR operations are ongoing. We are concentrating our efforts along the south to southwest of Sarangani,” Soria said.
Despite the intensified efforts, Soria reported that no additional survivors have been found as of Wednesday night.
He confirmed that the motorbanca had a total of 16 people on board; one has been rescued, leaving 15 still missing.
Philippine Coast Guard vessels continue to scour the area, with the help of the Philippine Navy and the Philippine Air Force, particularly the Tactical Operations Wing Eastern Mindanao.
“Our ships are still out there, with Philippine Navy vessels also assisting in the operations,” Soria added.
Christopher Bulig, the survivor found near Sarangani Island, was airlifted by the Tactical Operations Wing Eastern Mindanao of the Philippine Air Force aboard a Black Hawk S-70i helicopter on Jan. 21, 2026, to Davao City.
Upon arrival, Bulig was received and comforted by TOWEASTMIN Wing Commander Brig. Gen. Romeo Jerome M. Dirilo, before being brought to Camp Panacan Hospital at Naval Station Felix Apolinario for further medical assessment.
