THE SANGGUNIANG Panlungsod has approved two resolutions on Tuesday seeking to strengthen the protection of government property across Davao City’s barangays.
Councilor Jessica Bonguyan moved to pass the resolutions citing recent reports of vandalism, damage, and theft of public property.
The first resolution requested all punong barangays to deploy village patrols to oversee government property and maintain peace and order within their jurisdictions.
It also called for the strict imposition of penalties against individuals involved in vandalism, theft, and property damage.
“There is a vital government property in every barangay that requires continuous monitoring and protection,” the resolution stated.
Bonguyan noted that recent reports indicate security concerns, including cases of malicious vandalism and stolen public fixtures, resulting in significant financial losses to the government and compromised safety of public facilities.
The move arises from a report by Barangay 76-A chairman Roberto Olan-olan about theft and vandalism on some of their community projects.
In another measure, the council also adopted a resolution reminding all barangays to install and maintain camera systems, in coordination with the Public Safety and Security Office (PSSO) and in accordance with Ordinance No. 0331-23, Series of 2023, otherwise known as the Amended CCTV Ordinance of Davao City.
“The installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) camera systems has proven to be an effective tool in deterring criminal activities, assisting law enforcement agencies in the investigation of crimes, preserving evidence, and ensuring the safety of the public,” the resolution stated.
Bonguyan said both resolutions are efforts of the council’s broader push to strengthen security measures and surveillance in communities and the protection of public infrastructure.
