“Here, we felt that the government does not discriminate.”
Speaking on behalf of 30 former rebels who completed a seven-day deradicalization program on Thursday, Oct. 29, a female former combatant expressed deep gratitude for the government’s whole-of-nation approach, calling it a turning point that gave them a second chance at life.
“I express my heartfelt thanks for your unwavering support and for accepting us as Friends Rescued,” she said in Cebuano. “We truly see the whole-of-nation approach giving us new hope.”
She was among the 30 “Friends Rescued” (FRs) who completed the Batch 10 intervention held from Oct. 23 to 29 at the 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion headquarters in Barangay Bancasi, Butuan City.
The seven-day program was spearheaded by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) of Agusan del Norte in partnership with the 402nd Infantry “Stingers” Brigade, the 29th Infantry “Matatag” Battalion, the 23rd Infantry “Masigasig” Battalion, and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Designed to foster positive behavioral change, the initiative aims to help former combatants embrace peaceful living and prepare for reintegration as productive community members.
Agusan del Norte Provincial Governor Ma. Angelica Rosedell Amante reaffirmed the local government’s long-term commitment to supporting former rebels through their transition back into civilian life.
“Our partnership from here on has no end,” Amante said. “Whatever challenges we face in governance, through thick and thin, we will continue working together and strengthening our unity.”
Col. Ricky L. Canatoy, deputy commander of the 402nd Infantry Brigade, commended the provincial government’s sustained focus on peace and social development initiatives.
“I am deeply grateful to the local government of Agusan del Norte,” Canatoy said. “Despite the province’s many priorities, they have never forgotten our Friends Rescued—providing them with programs and opportunities to improve their livelihoods and build a better future for their families.”
In a statement, the 29th Infantry Battalion reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside local government units and stakeholders to sustain peace gains and drive lasting development across Agusan del Norte.
