THE KADAYAWAN Festival is featured as the eighth coin of the 12-piece Philippine Festivals commemorative coin series.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) announced that the Kadayawan Festival will be featured for the month of August.
“To the people of Davao City, the Kadayawan Festival is a thanksgiving for nature’s bounty,” BSP said in a video posted on its Facebook page.
More than a celebration of heritage and ethnic culture, the festival also honors the courage of Moro communities in resisting Spanish colonization, being among the first settlers of Davao alongside Lumad.
The P100 silver coin pays tribute to the celebration formerly known as Apo Duwaling, which stands for Mt. Apo, durian, and waling-waling.
The colorized area of the coin depicts a dancer holding durian, mangosteen, marang and pomelo.
It also features the waling-waling, referred to as the “Queen of Philippine Orchids,” and Mount Apo, considered the highest mountain in the country.
The patterns representing Davao’s 11 ethnolinguistic tribes are also highlighted in the coin.
The eight diamond-shaped figures along the border symbolize August as the 8th month of the year.
At the top is a durian-shaped design serving as the icon of the Kadayawan Festival commemorative coin.
The coin is bordered by patterns inspired by the clothing of festival dancers, while an ethnic design, or banderitas, is seen at the perimeter.
The Kadayawan Festival icon, durian, is also featured on the reverse side, along with other festival icons. The 12-coin series has a similar reverse design.
“The BSP joins the nation in celebrating the colorful festival of Davao City. Every coin is a legacy of our culture,” BSP stressed.
The commemorative coin will be available at the BSP online store on August 20, 10 a.m., for P5,000 each, but every coin has a legal tender value of P100.
