ILIGAN CITY — On Holy Tuesday, while the city observed one of the most solemn days of the Lenten season, the Iligan City Jail–Male Dormitory was alive with a different kind of reflection — one rooted in learning, renewal, and hope.

Inside its walls, 40 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) traded silence for the sound of pens scratching on paper and tools clicking into place. It was the start of the 2026 Hope Behind Bars Program of the Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), an initiative that has turned the jailhouse into a schoolhouse.

English enrichment: Finding voice behind bars

For 20 PDLs, the day began with words. Guided by professors from MSU-IIT’s College of Education, participants embarked on the English Enrichment Course, tackling grammar, sentence construction, and expressive writing.

But beyond technical lessons, the program offered something deeper: a chance to reclaim their voice. Each exercise became a step toward clarity, confidence, and connection — whether in navigating legal documents, writing personal reflections, or sharing stories that matter.

“Education behind bars is a powerful act of restoration,” said City Jail Warden JCINSP Carmelo A. Corsame. “It proves that rehabilitation through learning is not just possible, but transformative.”

Basic house wiring: Skills that spark opportunity

In another room, 20 more PDLs bent over wires and tools, learning the fundamentals of electrical measurement, safety, and practical wiring. The Basic House Wiring Course, led by MSU-IIT instructors, was a spark of possibility.

For many, the skills gained could translate into livelihood opportunities upon reintegration. For others, the discipline and teamwork fostered by the course reignited a sense of purpose long dimmed by confinement.

Hope Behind Bars: A movement of restoration

The English and wiring courses are only the beginning. The 2026 Hope Behind Bars Program will soon roll out a diverse slate of initiatives: sports and dance lessons, digital literacy through Tech Behind Bars, soap-making, financial literacy, painting and visual arts, and herbal wellness. Livelihood trainings are targeted for TESDA accreditation, ensuring that PDLs leave not just with hope, but with credentials.

Other MSU-IIT departments are also mobilizing — from eco-hub projects to medical missions and library organization — proving that rehabilitation is a community effort.

From jailhouse to schoolhouse

First inked in November 2023 and renewed in February 2025, the partnership between MSU-IIT and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has steadily transformed Iligan City Jail–Male Dormitory. What was once a place of confinement is now a place of learning, where Holy Week itself became a season not only of reflection, but of renewal.

On Holy Tuesday, the message was clear: behind bars, hope is alive — and it begins with education.
