THE DURIAN Exporters Association of the Philippines (DEAP) announced that exporting of durian pulp to Malaysia may start next year.
During the Business Matters forum at Abreeza Ayala Mall on Thursday, DEAP president Larry Miculob said exporting durian pulp to Malaysia is a response to the discrimination of other varieties tagged “unexportable.”
“This product will be the answer to the discrimination of other varieties that couldn’t be exported,” Miculob said.
Mixed with varieties from Malaysia, he said it will be re-exported to China in line with inter-Asian trading activities.
Miculob stressed that Malaysia cannot meet the required volume of durian to China, requiring the need to search for other sources.
“They have yet to provide us specific figures, but they said if we can export 100 metric tons or more,” he said.
Asked if the country can export durian pulp directly to China, he said Malaysia has the necessary facility to keep a standard quality.
The durian pulp will be processed into durian pizza and pies, which have a great demand in China. This year, the company exported three million kilos of frozen durian to China, which is higher than the two million kilos of fresh durian.
He stressed the country’s market share in China is less than 1%, as the Chinese market is dominated by Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
In Mindanao, the exporter said there are a total of 15,000 hectares planted of durian trees with varieties being puyat, arancillo, and cob, among others.
Miculob said 2025 has not been a good year for durian production due to the sudden weather changes, which affected the fruiting flowers.
