ABOITIZ Foundation, through Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC) and University of the Philippines Mindanao, signed a memorandum of agreement on Monday, Dec. 15, for a scholarship program for college students.
Engr. Enriczar Tia, DLPC president and CEO, represented Aboitiz, along with Jowelle Ann Cruz, Impact Lead for Education, and Prof. Lyre Anni Murao, UPMin chancellor, who sealed the agreement.
Tia said the MOA signing is to formally welcome 12 new scholars from UP Mindanao under the Aboitiz Future Leaders scholarship program.
“The Aboitiz Future Leaders Scholarship Program continues its journey of empowering young minds, welcoming another batch of dedicated scholars from Mindanao,” Tia said.
Established in 2000, Tia said the program has stood on a belief that supporting education is more than helping students finish school, but it is about shaping leaders who will positively impact their communities, their fields, and the future of the country.
Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao of the University of the Philippines Mindanao said in her speech that the 12 students were chosen for their character, perseverance, and desire to make a difference.
“We believe that education must be rooted in honor, excellence, and service to the nation. Through this partnership with Davao Light and the Aboitiz Foundation, that belief is made tangible,” she said.
“When institutions come together to support students, we are not only helping individuals. We are helping shape communities and the future of Mindanao,” Murao added.
The 12 new scholars are among the 100 scholars nationwide in other campuses of the University of the Philippines.
Each student is entitled to a P10,000 cash assistance every month until graduation, provided they maintain a GWA of 85%, with no dropped subjects and failing and/or incomplete grades.
Not only financial help, but Tia said they can also experience growth-mentorship, real-world experiences, and guidance that nurture their talents, values, and sense of responsibility with Aboitiz.
The scholars can have a paid internship with Aboitiz and have a chance to be employed once they graduate.
For the University of the Philippines-Mindanao, BS Data Science and BS Computer Science courses are prioritized, considering the workforce Aboitiz eyes in the future.
