Knowledge and Innovation Challenge launched to search for the next big development idea

THE PEACE and Equity Foundation (PEF) launched the Knowledge and Innovation Challenge for Change (KICK) to uncover real-world solutions and forward-looking ideas that inspire learning, replication, and action.

The KICK is a national competition open to Philippine-based registered organizations with innovative solutions to social challenges. It has two tracks: the Proven track, for real-world, implemented solutions demonstrating measurable impact with potential for scale and replication, and the Emerging track, for early-stage concepts, prototypes, or innovative ideas with clear potential for social impact, ready to be developed and tested on the ground.

The themes for KICK are based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including social entrepreneurship, youth-led initiatives, resilience, sustainability, and climate solutions. 

Winners will receive up to ₱2,500,000 to bring their testing, scaling, or replication plans to life. They will also be featured in high-quality print and video stories shared across KICK’s platforms and will gain exclusive access to key funders, development networks, and industry leaders through KICK-organized events, showcases, and referrals.

The deadline for the application is June 15, 2026. The KICK winners will be announced at the PEF 25th-anniversary culminating event in November 2026.

Therma South hosts MOHSG sustainability training

DAVAO CITY – Forty of Davao City’s brightest high school leaders gathered at AboitizPower subsidiary Therma South, Inc. (TSI) on February 28, 2026, to explore how sustainable development can shape the future of their communities. The Most Outstanding High School Graduate (MOHSG) nominees, part of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Davao’s youth development program, examined how long-term, collaborative initiatives and companies like TSI contribute to progress aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

Through interactive discussions, students explored how global sustainability goals, through localized action, can address challenges in Mindanao, particularly in Davao, from climate resilience and energy access to social equity and economic growth.

Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao also attended the workshop and provided an in-depth explanation of the 17 UNSDGs, helping students connect global objectives with local realities and opportunities for impact.

“The UNSDG framework challenges me to think beyond short-term projects. It makes me ask: Will this initiative still matter in years to come? Will it help the next generation of students?” said Ulysses, a MOHSG nominee from Los Amigos National High School.

TSI offered students a closer look at Mindanao’s energy systems, demonstrating how responsible management and community-focused operations contribute to sustainable development. “We want young leaders to understand the broader role of a balanced energy system in advancing community developmentand long-term progress,” said Engr. Mar Benedec Picar, TSI Pollution Control Officer.

The training emphasized reflection, collaboration, and practical understanding of local challenges. Arman Miguel Montero, MOHSG 59 Project Chair and 2026 JCI Davao President-Elect, highlighted the importance of awareness as the foundation for leadership: “When students understand the real issues shaping Mindanao, they can lead with confidence and purpose. Leadership starts with knowledge and grows through action.”

The MOHSG UNSDG Training illustrates the power of multi-sector collaboration. Through the combined efforts of JCI Davao, TSI, and Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao, student leaders gain the tools and insights to translate knowledge into meaningful contributions for their communities.

“By connecting youth leadership with real-world insights, the training empowers students to become active contributors to Mindanao’s sustainable development. The lessons they take forward today could shape solutions that benefit communities for years to come,” Ulysses added. The program is part of JCI Davao’s long-running MOHSG initiative, which aims to equip student leaders with life skills, leadership values, and exposure to different sectors in Mindanao, ensuring the next generation is prepared to tackle social, economic, and environmental challenges.

SM Book Nook launches nationwide donation drive

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, SM Supermalls, through its flagship literacy program SM Book Nook, is calling on communities nationwide to help spark the joy of reading by donating pre-loved books as part of the SM Book Nook Book Donation Drive, starting July 7, 2025, in all SM malls across the country.

Anchored on the theme “Under the Same Sky: Share the Magic of Stories,” this initiative encourages mallgoers, tenants, partners, and communities to donate quality books that will benefit children, families, and readers from all walks of life.

A portion of the books will be turned over to the National Library of the Philippines and its affiliate libraries, while others will support the expansion of SM Book Nook reading hubs to more SM malls and partner institutions nationwide.

With a big smile and a stack of stories, a young story seeker drops off her pre-loved books at the SM Book Nook—spreading the magic of reading one tale at a time.

“SM Book Nook was created to be more than a space—it’s a movement. With every book donated, we create ripples of knowledge, imagination, and inclusion. We believe that stories can bridge generations and uplift communities,” said Shereen T. Sy, pioneer of the SM Book Nook program under SM Cares.

The campaign aims to collect 40,000 books in line with SM’s 40th anniversary milestone. Each SM mall will serve as an official drop-off point, where specially designed donation boxes will be placed in strategic in-mall locations. Starting July 7, 2025, mall communities are invited to drop off pre-loved books in good condition—complete, clean, dry, and free from major damage.

Empower Communities Through Your Book Donations

SM Book Nook and the National Library of the Philippines formalize partnership for Book Donation Drive, joining forces to expand access to books and promote a culture of reading nationwide.

Accepted books include fiction and non-fiction titles, children’s books and young adult literature, academic and reference books, as well as magazines and comics in good condition.

Beyond donations, the campaign also highlights SM Cares’ long-term vision to make every SM mall a hub for inclusive learning, community engagement, and shared hope—especially for young readers and future leaders.

This initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
