MDPPA shares fuel-saving tips for motorcycle riders

WITH FUEL prices continuing to rise, the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA) encourages riders to adopt simple habits that can help reduce fuel consumption. Whether you use your motorcycle for daily commuting, business, or weekend leisure, small changes can go a long way in making every gasoline liter count.

Here are seven practical tips to help improve your motorcycle’s fuel efficiency:

1. Ride Smoothly and Steadily

Avoid rapid acceleration and sudden braking. Maintaining a steady speed on open roads and anticipating stops by easing off the throttle early allows the engine to run more efficiently, helping conserve fuel.

2. Maintain Your Motorcycle Regularly

Regular engine tune-ups, timely oil changes, and proper chain adjustments all contribute to better fuel efficiency. A well-maintained motorcycle burns fuel more effectively, reducing waste and preventing costly repairs later on.

3. Avoid Idling for Long Periods

Avoid letting the engine idle for long periods, such as when waiting or stuck in heavy traffic. Idling consumes fuel without moving you forward; turning off the engine during extended stops can lead to noticeable savings.

4. Check Tire Pressure Regularly

Underinflated tires create more resistance, forcing your engine to work harder. Make it a habit to check your tire pressure at least once a week or before long rides. Properly inflated tires not only save fuel but also improve handling and safety, especially on wet and uneven roads.

5. Reduce Extra Weight

Carrying unnecessary items increases fuel consumption over time. Bring only what you need for your trip. Less weight means less effort for the engine and better overall efficiency.

6. Use the Recommended Fuel

Always use the fuel grade recommended by your motorcycle manufacturer. Higher-priced, high-octane fuel does not automatically guarantee better mileage if your engine isn’t designed for it.

7. Plan Trips Ahead

Smart planning makes every ride more efficient. Combine multiple errands into one trip and choose less congested routes to reduce time spent in stop-and-go traffic. Additionally, riding during off-peak hours helps you maintain a steady pace, saving both fuel and time.

Motorcycle sales hit 171K in Sept. 2025, marks 21.2% growth year-on-year: MDPPA

THE PHILIPPINE motorcycle industry maintained its strong momentum with a total of 171,155 units sold across the country in September 2025, marking a significant 21.2 percent increase compared to the 141,202 units sold in the same month last year, according to data from the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association, Inc. (MDPPA).

Additionally, from January to September 2025, total motorcycle sales have reached 1,398,315 units, up 12.8 percent from the 1,239,258 units sold during the same period in 2024. The steady growth highlights how motorcycles remain a practical choice for many Filipino commuters navigating high fuel and transport costs and urban congestion.

“Motorcycles remain a popular choice among Filipinos due to several key factors. They offer an affordable means of personal mobility, especially at a time when economic uncertainties have placed pressure on household budgets. Their fuel efficiency and low maintenance costs also make them ideal for daily use. Riders can also cut through traffic much easier, allowing for quicker and more convenient travel,” said Toni Boi Acuesta, MDPPA’s marketing committee chairperson.

In terms of regional distribution, Luzon continues to account for more than half of the overall sales, contributing 56 percent of September’s total with 95,712 units sold. Meanwhile, the Visayas and Mindanao regions each contributed 22 percent of total sales, with 37,675 and 37,768 units sold, respectively, showing that demand remains strong not just in urban centers, but across all major regions.

The MDPPA remains optimistic about the industry’s performance for the remainder of the year. With only three months left in 2025, the association sees the positive trend continuing.

“These figures have consistently shown that motorcycles remain a top choice for Filipinos. Their affordability, ease of use, and ability to navigate traffic make them the most practical option for everyday mobility. We believe these reasons will continue to fuel steady growth until year-end,” said Engr. Alexander A. Cumpas, MDPPA president. “As 2025 enters its final quarter, all signs point to a strong finish for the motorcycle industry, reaffirming its role as a vital part of the country’s transportation landscape.”

MDPPA leading a safer journey for every rider – over 1,000 Filipinos making an impact for a safer road in H1 of 2025

THE MOTORCYCLE Development Program Participants Association, Inc. (MDPPA) continues to make great strides in its mission to promote shared safety on Philippine roads, successfully conducting a series of Road Safety Seminars reaching a total of 1,088 participants from various sectors including students, traffic enforcers, city employees, and motorcycle riders, just in the first half of 2025 alone.

MDPPA kicked off the year with two major engagements at the University of Makati. On February 13, 65 students from the College of Business and Financial Science and the Institute of Imaging Health Sciences joined an interactive session that combined road safety education with engaging discussions and takeaway learning materials.

Just two weeks later, on February 27, MDPPA kept the momentum going with a much larger audience of 345 attendees. Students from seven colleges and institutes at the university came together for another round of learning that reinforced the university’s commitment to holistic education and responsible citizenship.

The seminars extended beyond academic institutions. On April 25, MDPPA partnered with Dualtech Training Center Foundation Inc. to educate 155 technical-vocational students on essential safety practices, empowering them to become responsible road users in their future professions.

On May 15, MDPPA trained 139 traffic enforcers under Quezon City’s Traffic and Transport Management Department (TTMD), helping strengthen their capabilities in traffic direction, road discipline, and accident prevention.

This was followed by a Road Safety Week event on May 20, held in partnership with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) at Bulwagan Hall in Quezon City. The session provided 77 motorcycle riders with in-depth lessons on defensive riding, signage interpretation, and emotional regulation behind the wheel.

The association returned to Quezon City on May 22 for another successful seminar that welcomed 232 participants, including LGU employees and motorcycle riders, underscoring the city’s growing culture of proactive safety education.

Finally, on June 12, MDPPA continued its outreach through a collaborative seminar with the Tanay Local Government Unit. Here, 75 residents were equipped with practical safety knowledge and responsible riding habits to help foster a safer road environment in their municipality.

These efforts reflect MDPPA’s unwavering advocacy to embed safety into everyday road use. With a total of 1,088 individuals reached so far, the association is not only creating ripple effects across communities but also building a culture of shared responsibility and awareness on the road.

“Through these seminars, we are not just imparting knowledge, we are shaping a safety-first mindset that resonates with every generation of riders. MDPPA continues to evolve with the times so we can better serve the needs of today’s motorcycle community and help pave the way to a safer road environment and more responsible riders in the future,” said Road Safety Committee Chairperson, Michael Lopez.

More Road Safety Seminars are already in the pipeline for the second half of the year as MDPPA continues to champion its vision of safer journeys for all.
