AS PART of the year-round celebration of the 70th anniversary of Japan–Philippines diplomatic friendship, the Consulate General of Japan in Davao is set to host a beginner-friendly bonsai workshop next weekend.
The event, titled “Introduction to the World of Bonsai: A Beginner-Friendly Workshop,” will take place on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the Davao City National High School Multi-Purpose Gym.
Co-organized with the Davao Bonsai Society, the initiative aims to foster a deeper appreciation for traditional Japanese culture among local students and plant enthusiasts.
The program features an introductory lecture followed by a hands-on workshop guiding participants through the basics of bonsai cultivation and design.
The main highlight of the event is a live masterclass by renowned Japanese bonsai master Masashi Hirao, widely known in the international horticulture community as the “Bonsai Warrior.”
Hirao is celebrated for blending traditional Japanese techniques with innovative, modern expressions.
In 2013, he was appointed as a Japan Cultural Envoy by the country’s Agency for Cultural Affairs.
His high-profile international portfolio includes showcasing works at the Japan Pavilion during the 2015 Milan Expo, donating bonsai pieces to the Royal Family of Bhutan in 2016, and exhibiting regularly at the Setouchi Triennale and the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale.
Beyond classic exhibitions, Hirao has pushed the boundaries of the art form by designing stage decor for major contemporary events, including the FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL’s YouTube interview area and the historic “Otobutai” stage at Nijo Castle.
According to the Consulate General, admission to the workshop is entirely free. However, local organizers are advising the public that slots are strictly limited and advanced registration is required to secure entry.
Interested participants and media representatives can coordinate directly with the Consulate General of Japan in Davao through their official culture desk at culture.dvo@dv.mofa.go.jp.
