Leaving home is often imagined as a grand rite of passage: a suitcase packed with dreams, a heart eager for independence, and a future waiting just beyond the familiar. Yet adulthood rarely announces itself through dramatic milestones. More often, it arrives quietly, in grocery lists, utility bills, household purchases, and the countless small decisions that teach us how to stand on our own.
The longer I watch my children make their way in the world, the more I realize that growing up is not measured by age or achievement alone. It is revealed in ordinary moments that seem insignificant until we look back and see how much they have shaped us. One such moment comes from my daughter’s experience living abroad. In her reflection, a simple shoe rack becomes an unexpected symbol of gratitude, resilience, and the grace that accompanies us through the everyday work of becoming adults.
Excerpt from The Shoe Rack
“Of all the things in my tiny apartment, my very first home of my own, my most prized possession is my flimsy, cheap shoe rack, a wooden structure with four thin shelves to store my dirty shoes and with eight knobs attached to its tall frames, extending towards the ceiling just below my height, to hang my bags, a hat, and a belt. I’d often look at it to remind myself to be grateful, and I can definitely say it has worked 100% every time. When I first came to this country, I knew I was moving abroad. I knew I would have my own place, my own job, and my own responsibilities. But I don’t think I understood then how much of life would suddenly become my responsibility too. Things I had never really thought about before became things I had to think about now. Where am I going to put my shoes? What brand of eggs should I buy? Do I really need a fridge? Where can I buy the cheapest but durable umbrella? Should I buy an air freshener? Why are spices so expensive?
Suddenly, I was buying things that I had always assumed would just be there. And slowly, my tiny apartment began to look less like a place I was staying in and more like a place I lived in. There were assorted plates in my makeshift kitchen, a knife and a peeler, shelves and an air freshener sitting somewhere it probably didn’t need to be. I have more shoes than I expected to own and bags hanging on that cheap little shoe rack. None of it sounds particularly impressive. But sometimes I stop, look around, and realize there was a time when I couldn’t imagine having to figure all of this out for myself.
Now, I come home, make my own meals, clean my own space, and somehow know when I’m running low on groceries without having to ask anyone. I suppose that’s how growing up happened for me, not all at once, just in little things.”
My daughter’s reflection is a reminder that adulthood is rarely built in sweeping moments of triumph. More often, it takes shape through small acts of responsibility repeated day after day: choosing groceries, paying bills, making meals, organizing a living space, and learning to care for oneself in ways that once went unnoticed.
A shoe rack may seem like an unlikely teacher, yet it quietly tells a story of growth. It bears witness to courage, adaptability, and the gradual confidence that comes from learning to create a home in an unfamiliar place. What appears ordinary on the surface often carries the deeper story of who we are becoming.
Perhaps that is one of life’s enduring lessons: grace is often found not in extraordinary achievements but in the small beginnings we are tempted to overlook. As Scripture reminds us, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin” (Zechariah 4:10). In every humble step toward responsibility, every act of faithfulness in the everyday, God is already at work, shaping a life one ordinary moment at a time.
