MANILA, Philippines — Ayala Malls is accelerating its shift to renewable energy, expanding rooftop solar installations across more of its malls as part of its commitment to building more sustainable spaces.
Rooftop solar installations are part of Ayala Malls’ sustainability efforts, integrated into the way its properties are designed and operated.
Solar installations at 13 malls including Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Ayala Malls Harbor Point, Ayala Center Cebu, Ayala Malls Central Bloc, Ayala Malls Nuvali, and Ayala Malls MarQuee now generate around 20.8 million kWh of clean electricity annually – cutting an estimated 16,200 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
Solar installations at a further 18 malls, including Glorietta, Greenbelt, One Ayala, Ayala Malls Circuit, and Ayala Malls Vertis North, along with new developments such as Ayala Malls Evo City and Ayala Malls Gatewalk, are expected to generate an additional 29.4 million kWh annually – equivalent to a further 22,940 tonnes of CO2 emissions reduced.
“Solar is one of the ways we reduce our environmental footprint. It’s part of our diversified approach – combining on-site generation with clean power sourcing to support long-term clean energy performance across our malls,” said Paul Birkett, Ayala Malls Chief Operating Officer.
The solar rollout is part of Ayala Malls’ broader energy strategy. Today, renewable energy accounts for 98% of the electricity used across its properties, sourced through accredited renewable energy suppliers and independently verified through International Renewable Energy Certificates (iRECs). Rooftop solar builds on that – allowing Ayala Malls to generate its own clean energy on-site that could translate to further cost savings in the long term.
The approach reflects a principle that has long guided Ayala Malls: being sustainable by design. It’s why natural daylight through open spaces, glass façades, and skylights reduces the need for artificial lighting, why its signature green spaces give communities room to breathe, and why recycled water from sinks, restrooms, and merchants’ kitchens now helps power air conditioning across its malls.
“As Ayala Malls continues to grow, we’re ensuring sustainability remains integral to how we operate — ensuring our tenants are set up to succeed, everyone who walks through our malls stays engaged, and our spaces stay resilient and future-ready,” Birkett added.
For Ayala Malls, this is what doing business responsibly looks like: spaces that are better for both people and the planet.
