PSA XI: Food prices, transport push Davao Region inflation rate to 8.9 in August

DAVAO Region’s inflation rate accelerated to 8.9% in August 2026, up from 8.4% in July, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) XI.

Baby Jean P. Alid, officer-in-charge of PSA XI, presented the figures during an online briefing on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages remained the dominant driver of the region’s inflation, posting a rate of 9.9% in August, up from 9.3% in July. 

Within this category, cereals and cereal products rose to 20.4% from 19.2%, and fish and other seafood climbed to 16.3% from 15.8%. 

Still under the category, fruits and nuts jumped sharply to 5.1% from 1.7%.

Meanwhile, transport was the second major source of acceleration, with inflation rising to 13.3 % from 11.7 %.

The uptick was driven by gasoline prices climbing to 35.2% from 30.5% and diesel surging to 56.2% from 39.4%.

At the commodity level, rice was the largest driver of August inflation, followed by electricity, then gasoline, then rentals and other pelagic fish.

PSA reported that the region’s average inflation from January to August 2026 stood at 6.8%, based on the year-on-year change in the average consumer price index compared to the same period in 2025. 

Monthly inflation rates for the year show a clear upward trajectory: 3.1% in January, 3.3% in February, 5.9% in March, 8.9% in April, 7.8% in May, 8.1% in June, 8.4% in July, and 8.9% in August.

Among the provinces, Davao del Sur recorded the highest inflation rate in the region at 12.1% in August, up sharply from 9.6% in July.
