THE PHILIPPINE Eagle Foundation (PEF) publicly announced on Tuesday, March 10, the new raptor chick 32 named Bayani, the Filipino word for “hero”.
In a social media post, PEF revealed that the name was chosen by its adopter, Nico Herth, owner and CEO of Procon Grumbach.
Bayani is now in its 3rd month, is the offspring of Philippine Eagles Dakila and Sinag, produced through cooperative artificial insemination as part of the PEF conservation breeding program.
PEF said Bayani was successfully bred and hatched at the National Bird Breeding Sanctuary (NBBS) in Brgy. Eden, Toril district, through the support of sponsors and donors.
“The Philippine Eagle Foundation is committed to ensuring and maintaining the young Philippine Eagle’s overall health and well-being,” PEF reaffirmed.
The chick went through non-invasive check-ups to ensure its health before the official announcement. It is now housed at the NBBS.
The chick’s arrival is meaningful. Bayani celebrates the courage and hope carried by every young Philippine Eagle following the loss of Chick 31, named Riley, who was also an offspring of Philippine Eagles Dakila and Sinag.
Riley was born on January 16 at the NBBS, also through cooperative artificial insemination, the first Philippine eagle to have hatched unassisted.
Riley, however, died on April 15, which prompted the Foundation to strengthen health and nutrition programs to prevent incidents.
