- Bolton Bridge I to close for 10 days for rehab: CTTMO
THE CITY Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) announced on Thursday that the Bolton Bridge I will be closed to vehicles for 10 days beginning 10 p.m. on July 18 to repair its expansion joints.
CTTMO officer-in-charge Atty Eduardo Perez said the request to close the bridge came from the Department of Public Works and Highways and its contractor due to cracks caused by the 2022 fire and a series of earthquakes.
He said the southbound bridge going downtown will be totally closed to traffic while the northbound bridge will be open to two-way traffic.
“The proposed repair works are necessary to prevent further deterioration and potential structural damage that may compromise the safety of the motoring public,” Perez said.
The CTTMO has developed a traffic management plan to ensure minimal disruption to traffic flow in the area.
“To prevent traffic congestion at critical intersections, particularly at the Sandawa Intersection, heavy trucks coming from the north will be prohibited from passing through Bridge 2. Instead, these vehicles will be rerouted via Quirino Avenue and other designated alternate routes,” the CTTMO said.
The office will also deploy traffic personnel to assist motorists at strategic areas.
“Rest assured, we are considering the Traffic Engineering Division and Enforcement Division regarding measures before it will close,” Perez said.
“Backjob daw ang term, meaning nag attempt ta nga ingato ang method, dili daw mauga ang semento kung paagian dayon, kay mao man tong gi compromise,” Perez said during the iSpeak Media Forum on June 9.
It can be noted that Bolton Bridge I was temporarily closed from April 4 to May 18, 2025, which started from 10 pm to 5 a.m. daily, while Bridge 2, which leads downtown, remains passable as a two-way route.
Vehicles weighing over 4,500 kg were prohibited from passing through Bolton Bridge 1 and advised to take alternative routes via MacArthur Highway and Bankerohan Bridge. In January 2022, both bridges were closed to traffic following a fire that compromised the integrity of the structures.
