AMID A deepening national energy emergency triggered by Middle East conflicts, the Municipal Government of Sta. Cruz has moved to cushion the blow for its residents, earmarking ₱50 million for a mid-term subsidy program.

In a press conference on Thursday, April 16, Mayor Jose Nelson “Tata” Sala Sr. announced a multi-pronged response, following national directives to mitigate the impact of rising fuel and electricity costs.

Immediate financial relief

For instance, the Mayor directed the Local Finance Committee to expedite a supplemental budget of ₱15 million to ₱20 million for immediate relief. This initial funding will target the town’s most vulnerable sectors, including transport groups, fishermen, and distressed workers.

Beyond the immediate roll-out, the LGU has updated its Annual Investment Plan to include a ₱50 million mid-term subsidy program.

To protect consumers, Sala activated the Local Price Coordinating Council and formed an Ad Hoc Monitoring and Inspection Team. They are tasked, alongside the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), to inspect fuel stations and prevent trade malpractices or unfair price hikes.

Belt-tightening

Sala also ordered a 10% to 20% reduction in fuel and electricity consumption across all government offices.

“We cannot predict when this crisis will end,” Municipal Administrator Omar Jason Martel also said in the same press conference. “However, we assure you all that we can persevere.

“Santa Cruz stands firm and resilient, demonstrating that local leadership can drive meaningful impact even in the most complex crises,” he added.

The LGU has already coordinated with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Agriculture, and National Food Authority to ensure that social services and food security measures are maintained throughout the emergency.
