AS A civil affairs officer for the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), Lilian Mellejor coordinates initiatives designed to bridge divides between communities.

“UN Peacekeeping in Kosovo is not only about ending wars,” Mellejor says. “It is also about building trust through small-scale projects that prevent minor incidents from escalating.”

Mellejor oversees approximately 20 annual projects—ranging from handicraft workshops and greenhouse initiatives to youth engagement programs—that serve as practical instruments for peacebuilding.

These efforts create opportunities for cooperation, strengthen public confidence in local institutions, and address the immediate needs of vulnerable populations.

Lilian’s work isn’t defined by grand gestures, but by consistency. She prioritizes “showing up” in villages where the lives of ordinary people remain difficult.

Through this steady community engagement, she ensures that local voices are heard and that the gaps affecting people’s sense of security and inclusion are addressed.

Her story comes ahead of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers on May 29 , an annual observance honoring the military, police, and civilian personnel serving for peace worldwide.
