  • Suspect arrested in hit-and-run that killed woman

A 39-YEAR-OLD woman was killed in a fatal hit-and-run incident along Quimpo Boulevard early Sunday morning, leading to the eventual arrest of a 25-year-old female driver who was flagged down for suspected drunk driving.

The victim, identified only by police as alias Jen, a resident of Barangay 40-D, was crossing the road near the LTO XI office at approximately 1:20 a.m. on March 22, when struck by a black pick-up truck.

According to the investigation by PSSg Caputol of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), the impact was so severe that Jen was thrown approximately 30 steps from the point of impact.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the collision, the vehicle—a black Ford Ranger—sped off toward an undetermined direction, but the suspect’s escape was short-lived.

Aias Benjie, a truck driver for the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO), noticed the pick-up “zigzagging” along the road near Juna Subdivision. Acting on instinct, he blocked the vehicle near Champaca Street.

At the time, he was unaware that the vehicle had just been involved in a fatal crash.

Upon approaching the driver, identified as Denise, 25, a resident of Belisario Village, Agdao, Benjie reportedly detected a strong odor of alcohol on her breath.

He immediately apprehended the driver and escorted her to the Ecoland Police Station.

It was only after the turnover that authorities linked the Ford Ranger and its driver to the hit-and-run.

The suspect is now in police custody and faces a charge of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, while the vehicle was impounded as part of the evidence.
