PARA-ATHLETES were recognized on Tuesday, March 10, for representing the Philippines and bringing pride to Davao City as they won multiple medals during the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Thailand from January 20 -26, 2026.
Councilor Lorenzo Benjamin D. Villafuerte, committee chair on social services, presented the Davao athletes during the regular session at the Sangguniang Panlungsod to pay tribute to their determination in competition.
In para-judo, Kendews Granaderos and Edmond C. Montecillo each won a bronze medal.
In para-swimming, Ernie Gawilan earned two gold medals, one silver medal, and two bronze medals.
In basketball, Jannil Canete won two silver medals, while in para table tennis, Smith Billy Cartera and Racleo Martinez Jr. each took bronze medals.
In chess, Henry Roger Lopez captured two gold medals and two silver medals, while Evangeline Gamao secured one silver medal and two bronze medals.
Finally, Evenizer Celebrado won two gold medals, and Arvi Arreglado earned one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal in athletics.
“They encouraged us to embrace inclusivity, recognize the talents of every individual, and support programs that empower persons with disabilities to excel in all fields, especially in sports,” Villafuerte said.
Aside from the ASEAN Para Games, some para-athletes also competed in the 3rd Asian Chess Championship 2025 for Players with Disabilities and the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2025, where they won additional medals for the country.
The Councilor emphasized that the remarkable feats of Davao’s para-athletes at the 13th ASEAN Para Games filled the nation with pride and highlighted the boundless potential of persons with disabilities.
