Davao City councilor moves to establish community-based tourism framework

A LAWMAKER proposed an ordinance establishing a community-based tourism framework for Davao City.

Councilor Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz raised the measure during Tuesday’s session, June 23, to protect the local cultural heritage through responsible tourism development.

In her privilege speech, the committee chair on tourism and beautification noted that Davao City is home to diverse Indigenous Peoples communities, vibrant traditions, and unique local experiences that reflect the identity of Davaoeños.

She described these resources as valuable cultural assets and opportunities for sustainable economic growth and community empowerment.

“In many parts of our city, local communities possess the potential to become active participants in tourism development,” she said.

The councilor said it is high time to increase balance for economic progress with cultural preservation and environmental sustainability.

“Through Community-Based Tourism, communities are given the opportunity to showcase their culture, traditions, local products, indigenous knowledge systems, and way of life while generating sustainable livelihoods and preserving their heritage for future generations,” Dalodo-Ortiz stressed.

The approach ensures tourism benefits are felt directly by communities, making them partners rather than spectators in development.
