BARANGAY 76-A chairman Robert Olan-olan is lobbying for an ordinance to penalize car owners blocking main roads during fire incidents.
Olan-olan said road blockage delay the response from fire trucks and volunteers.
“All illegally parked cars that obstruct the roads, the owner should be jailed, the units should be impounded,” he said in an interview during a community outreach for fire victims on Feb. 27.
The chairman said the Feb. 10 fire was the first time in the barangay where 84 houses were burned down.
“I just appeal for everyone to observe the main roads. Don’t obstruct the main roads because that was the primary cause why the fire spread quickly,” he added.
“There’s no more road for the firetruck to pass through,” he added.
Olan-olan said he had requested the Davao City Council to review the potential measure to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The massive fire on Feb. 10 tore through a residential community in Purok Malamboon, Barangay 76-A, near Ecoland Phase 1, which displaced residents.
Bureau of Fire and Protection XI reported the blaze broke out at approximately 3 a.m, quickly escalated and took four hours before the situation was brought under control.
While there were no casualties or injuries, 75 families, 586 individuals were directly affected.
