Davao City – The Office of the Vice President (OVP) marked a momentous milestone, celebrating its 90th anniversary with the formal opening of a commemorative exhibit detailing the history and evolution of the institution.

The ceremony, held in Davao City, was graced by officials from the OVP, including USec Zulieka Lopez and Ms. Gene Rose Tecson, Head of the Mindanao Operations, Acting Vice Mayor of Davao Rodrigo Rigo Duterte II, members of the diplomatic corps, SM Supermalls officers, and honored guests.

The celebration honors the OVP’s establishment on November 15, 1935, coinciding with the inauguration of the Commonwealth. The office’s first occupant, Vice President Sergio Osmeña, took on a role deemed foundational to Philippine democracy.

Oscar Casaysay, Head of the Davao City Office for Culture and the Arts delivered the welcome remarks:

“We stand today at the gateway to a remarkable nine-decade journey. We are here to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Office of the Vice President, and to formally open this commemorative exhibit that brings our history to life.”

The exhibit is described as a “visual testament” that goes “beyond dates and names” to trace the story of service, succession, and unwavering commitment that has defined the Vice Presidency.

Attendees are encouraged to view the collected artifacts, documents, and photographs to:

Witness Grassroots Service: Images highlight Vice Presidents working “on the ground,” often spearheading crucial projects in education, health, and social welfare—described as the “silent, powerful mandate of this office.

Trace Institutional Resilience: Displays track the OVP’s journey across different locations, reflecting its resilience through periods of war, crisis, and political change. Casaysay stressed that the OVP is not merely an auxiliary position, but a “Pillar of Democracy.” It plays a critical role in guaranteeing the seamless continuity of government, providing much-needed stability during the nation’s most challenging moments.

Looking beyond the past, the 90th anniversary is also seen as an opportunity for reflection and resolution—to strengthen the institution for the next century of service.

He expressed hope that the exhibition would inspire all citizens, “especially the younger generation,” to appreciate the depth of commitment required for public service and the enduring value of democratic institutions.

The event concluded with a call to national pride and institutional honor. ABC
