BARANGAY 76-A chief Robert E. Olanolan has been suspended for one month without pay by the Office of the Ombudsman–Mindanao, a disciplinary action he attributes to his staunch opposition to a demolition project in the Cabacan–Times Beach area.
In a press statement released on Monday, Oct. 20, 2025, Olanolan confirmed receiving the suspension order but stated that while he respects the Ombudsman’s office, the decision was “painful” as it punishes a leader for “standing up for and caring for his people.”
“My action was not to violate the law, but to protect the genuine residents of Cabacan–Times Beach against the demolition by Ecoland Properties Development Corporation (EPDC),” Olanolan said.
“I cannot abandon our brothers and sisters who have long lived and earned a living on the said land,” he added.
The controversy revolves around the planned demolition of structures on the contested land in Cabacan–Times Beach, which the EPDC is reportedly claiming ownership of.
Olanolan’s statement frames his intervention as a necessary defense of long-time residents, many of whom face displacement.
Despite the temporary suspension from office, the village chief vowed to continue his advocacy.
“I will continue to stand and to protect the people,” he declared. He stressed that the fight transcends his personal circumstances. “This fight is not for me, but for everyone who stands for justice and humanity.”
The specific grounds for the Ombudsman’s decision were not detailed in the statement, but similar cases often involve allegations of exceeding authority or interfering with the lawful execution of court orders related to demolition.
The suspension is a significant development in the ongoing land dispute between the residents of Cabacan–Times Beach and the property developer.
Olanolan concluded his statement by thanking his constituents for their support, signaling his intention to resume his duties and continue the fight for the community upon the completion of his one-month suspension.
