DAVAO CITY — Davao Medical School Foundation, Inc. (DMSF) has observed improved water supply reliability and pressure in recent years, supporting its hospital and academic operations in Bajada, Davao City.
The institution, which celebrated its 50th anniversary on August 15, said reliable water is essential to maintaining patient care, sanitation, laboratory services, and other day-to-day operations across its hospital and campus.
DMSF Hospital operates 24 hours a day, making a dependable water supply essential to a wide range of clinical functions. Water is used for the sterilization of surgical instruments and reusable medical equipment, hand hygiene among clinical staff, sanitation in wards and operating rooms, laboratory testing, pharmacy compounding, food preparation, and general hospital upkeep.
Victoriano said water reliability also supports dialysis-related services and other water-dependent operations, allowing these activities to proceed on a more predictable schedule.
“Because the hospital operates on a 24/7 basis, any interruption to water service has an immediate and direct bearing on patient safety and the continuity of clinical care,” he said.
Supporting healthcare and medical education
The need for reliable water extends beyond the hospital.
As a medical education institution, DMSF relies on water for its teaching laboratories, including anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, histopathology, and physiology, where equipment cleaning and specimen handling require a consistent supply.
Water is likewise needed in clinical skills and simulation laboratories, restrooms, the campus cafeteria, classrooms, lecture halls, and other facilities used by students, faculty, and staff.
Established in 1976, DMSF celebrated 50 years of medical education and healthcare service in Davao this year. Its hospital, established in 2003, provides healthcare services while also serving as a training ground where students gain practical experience as they prepare for careers in healthcare.
DMSF has been connected to the Davao City Water District (DCWD) distribution network since the institution began operating its campus and hospital facilities.
More consistent supply, greater operational headroom
DMSF said it has observed a noticeable improvement in water supply reliability and pressure in recent years, consistent with the timeline of the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project (DCBWSP) which started delivery to DCWD in February 2024.
In practical terms, the institution said the improvement has translated into fewer service interruptions and more consistent water pressure across its hospital and campus buildings.
This has helped water-dependent operations such as sterilization, laboratory work, and dialysis-related services proceed on a more predictable schedule.
DMSF also said it has reduced the frequency with which it needs to activate its backup water arrangements, giving its facilities and engineering teams greater operational headroom.
“For an institution that is simultaneously a hospital and a school, water reliability is a public-health and patient-safety issue, not merely an operational convenience,” Victoriano said.
The DCBWSP is a public-private partnership between Apo Agua Infrastructura Inc. (Apo Agua) and DCWD. Through the project, Apo Agua treats surface water from the Tamugan River and supplies bulk water to DCWD, which distributes it to households, hospitals, businesses, and other users across Davao City.
By adding treated surface water to the city’s existing groundwater sources, the project complements the city’s water supply system and contributes to a more reliable and resilient source of water for Davao’s growing communities. For institutions such as DMSF, reliable water supply forms part of the essential infrastructure needed to keep healthcare services and medical education operating continuously.
