A series of major national events, tourism infrastructure projects, and growing foreign investment interest is transforming Misamis Occidental into one of Northern Mindanao’s fastest-rising tourism and events destinations.

Within the first half of 2026, the province hosted high-profile national gatherings, unveiled flagship tourism projects, attracted prospective foreign investors, and secured partnerships that provincial officials say are strengthening its position as a competitive destination for tourism, sports, and business.

Governor Henry S. Oaminal said the province’s development strategy goes beyond increasing tourist arrivals, focusing instead on translating growing attention into lasting economic opportunities for local communities.

“Our goal is not simply to attract visitors but to convert every opportunity into lasting investments, more jobs, stronger local businesses, and better livelihoods for every Misamisnon. Tourism becomes meaningful only when it creates real economic benefits for our people,” Oaminal said.

The province began the year by launching its 2026 Tourism Action Plan, outlining programs to expand tourism development, improve destination promotion, and increase visitor arrivals.

Local tourism stakeholders, including hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, also intensified efforts to raise service standards and enhance visitor experiences.

Misamis Occidental subsequently hosted the 10th National Fire Olympics, drawing delegates from across the country and generating more economic activity for local businesses.

Among the province’s biggest milestones was the opening of the Asenso Misamis Occidental Recreation and Adventure Park (AMORAP), now widely promoted as the “Maldives of Mindanao.” The flagship development has become a centerpiece of the province’s tourism expansion strategy.

The province also gained national and international exposure after hosting key events of the Miss Universe Philippines 2026 competition, showcasing Misamis Occidental’s natural attractions, culture, and hospitality before a nationwide audience.

In Tangub City, construction also commenced on the Asenso Global Gardens Ecotourism Park and Botanical Garden, with Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) Chief Operating Officer Mark Lapid leading the groundbreaking ceremony. The project is expected to further diversify the province’s tourism offerings.

The Miss Universe Philippines Organization later formally recognized Misamis Occidental as an official provincial partner during the pageant’s coronation night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, further elevating the province’s national tourism profile.

National government officials also visited the province during election-related activities led by Commission on Elections Chairman George Erwin Garcia. The delegation toured several emerging destinations, including AMORAP, Asenso Global Gardens, Don Victoriano, and Sapang Dalaga.

Investor confidence likewise continued to grow as South Korean business delegations explored opportunities for additional tourism developments, including a proposed golf course that provincial officials believe could strengthen international tourism and future connectivity.

The province also expanded its sports tourism initiatives with the opening of the AMORAP Sports Facilities, highlighted by the AMORAP Pickleball Tournament 2026, which attracted more than 600 participants from different parts of the country.

Provincial officials said these developments reflect broader investments not only in tourism but also in infrastructure, healthcare, education, sports, and economic development–initiatives they believe are steadily enhancing the province’s competitiveness.

With sustained infrastructure investments, increasing national exposure, and growing investor interest, Misamis Occidental continues to strengthen its position as one of Mindanao’s emerging tourism and events destinations while expanding opportunities for economic growth across the province.
