2025 China Film Festival launched at SM City Davao

THE CHINESE Embassy in the Philippines, Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Davao, and Film Development Council of the Philippines officially held the 2025 China Film Festival that premiered five featured movies from Nov. 8 to 22 at SM Ecoland Cinema 3.

A lineup of movies ranging from comedy, romance, drama, to adventure, the festival offers free screenings for local audiences to experience China’s most celebrated modern films in Davao cinemas.

More than just showcasing Chinese films through compelling storytelling, the month-long event highlights cultural exchange, serving as a vital bridge to build a stronger connection between China and the Philippines.

“We need to strengthen communications and deepen mutual understanding. Cultural exchange takes many forms and film stands out as a particularly unique medium,” Chinese Consul General in Davao Zhao Xiuzhen said during the launch day on Nov 7.

Successor”, “Viva La Vida,” “Pegasus 2,” “Detective Chinatown 1990,” and “Evacuate” from the 21st Century are the selected films for this year’s festival, with each having its own respective screening schedule.

Detective Chinatown 1900” (released in 2025) was the opening film of the festival, a movie that follows the story of Qin Fu (Haoran Liu) and Gui (Baoqiang Wang) to investigate the murder of a white woman in San Francisco.

Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines Huang Yaping said China’s overseas box office revenue has reached about $140M surpassing last year’s total. Chinese films have been released in 46 countries and regions, with 13 films surpassing $1B in overseas revenue.
