AN 84-YEAR-OLD woman perished in a fast-moving residential fire that gutted eight houses in Barangay 38-D early Sunday morning, Feb. 22.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) responded to the alarm at Rizal Extension around 4:34 a.m. The blaze, which reached the first alarm, quickly spread through the residential area, leaving eight structures totally destroyed. Firefighters managed to declare a “fire-out” by 5:36 am.

While four families were successfully evacuated, authorities confirmed one fatality—a female senior citizen who was unable to escape the burning structure. No other injuries were reported.

Fire Senior Inspector Frances Mae Sendrijas, spokesperson for the Davao City Fire District, confirmed that the victim was trapped inside her home as the flames spread.

“The 84-year-old woman was unable to come out of the house and was trapped, [which caused her death],” Sendrijas said.

Fire investigators are currently determining the cause of the blaze and the total estimated property damage.
