- Runners show up to support ICC-detained mayor-elect

MORE THAN 5,500 runners converged at the heart of Davao City at dawn today, not just for a race, but for a powerful demonstration of support for former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, affectionately known as “Tatay Digong.”
The inaugural Mayor Rodrigo Duterte Run, held on Sunday, July 6, transcended a typical sporting event, transforming into a fervent “homecoming in spirit” and a plea to bring the beloved figure back to Davao.
The event, organized by On Any Sunday Rider Club and Orango Tribe, saw the active participation of acting vice mayor, Councilor Rodrigo Duterte, who delivered a speech on behalf of Vice Mayor Baste Duterte.
“My uncle, Vice Mayor Baste Duterte, extends our deepest gratitude to all of you who participated and supported the 1st Mayor Rodrigo Duterte Run. On behalf of our family and our grandfather, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte – thank you very much for your continuous love and trust,” Councilor Duterte said.
He further emphasized the broader significance of the event, stating, “This run is more than just a race — it’s a symbol of unity and our love for Davao. Through your participation, you have shown that Tatay Digong’s legacy is still alive. I humbly ask that we continue our call — Bring Tatay Digong back home. This is not just for us, but for all the people.”
As runners reached the halfway mark, a drizzle began to fall. However, far from dampening spirits, the rain seemed to invigorate the participants. The brief shower only added a touch of drama to the already emotional event.
Meanwhile, supporters lined the sidelines, cheering enthusiastically with umbrellas in hand, as banners bearing “DU30” and the Philippine Flag waved proudly in the wind.
