DESPITE decades of the firecracker ban in Davao City, some residents still needed a harsh reminder.

The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) recently filed charges against two residents of Barangay Sasa, Buhangin District, marking the latest in a string of arrests aimed at maintaining the city’s “zero-injury” reputation.

Col Mannan C. Muarip, DCPO chief, emphasized that firecracker use is “not a harmless tradition” but a threat to public safety. While five cases were already processed on Jan. 3, the latest filing on Jan. 13 proved that the police are not letting their guard down even weeks after the holiday season.

The DCPO reminded the public that the ban remains a year-round mandate under City Ordinance No. 060-02.

With the recent filing of a criminal case against two Sasa residents, the DCPO sent a clear message to the public: there will be no mercy for violators of the firecracker ban.

The criminal charge filed on Jan. 13, before the Office of the City Prosecutor, marked the sixth such case lodged by the DCPO in line with the sustained campaign against firecracker-related hazards.

Five earlier cases were filed for inquest proceedings on Jan. 3, involving violators who were caught in the act.

“Let this serve as a stern warning: firecracker use is not a harmless tradition—it endangers lives, causes injuries, and threatens public safety. The DCPO will relentlessly pursue legal action against anyone who violates this ordinance, regardless of status or circumstance,” Muarip said.
