THE EASTERN Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) recorded 32 surrenders by members of the New People’s Army (NPA) since the beginning of the year.

During the Davao Peace and Security Press Briefing held at The Royal Mandaya Hotel, EastMinCom spokesperson Lt. Col. Ryann Velez characterized the figures as a “great improvement” in the military’s long-standing campaign of dismantling insurgency within its area of responsibility.

Velez said the command is nearing the final stages of its anti-insurgency efforts, noting the steady stream of surrenders.

“We are running near in our efforts as far as the insurgency is concerned,” Velez stated. “We are hoping the remnants and those left in the hinterlands will surrender and end the insurgency as peacefully as possible”.

The spokesperson’s statement underscores the military’s shift toward encouraging peaceful reintegration for the remaining insurgents still hiding in remote areas.

Meanwhile, Velez continues to urge communist guerrillas and supporters to avail themselves of the government’s reconciliation programs to begin their lives as productive citizens.
