Cebu Pacific Brings Sustainable Ground Operations Initiative to Clark Airport
Cebu Pacific and Clark International Airport’s inaugural plug-in of bridge-mounted equipment (BME) to a CEB aircraft.
Cebu Pacific has become the first carrier to use bridge mounted equipment (BME) at Clark International Airport (CRK), expanding its push for more sustainable ground operations.
Since October 2026, CEB has been using BME installed by CRK operator Luzon International Premiere Airport Development Corporation (LIPAD). The system supplies electricity and cooled air directly to aircraft parked at the gate, reducing the need to run jet fuel-powered auxiliary power units (APUs).
By drawing on airport-supplied power and cooling, aircraft use less fuel while parked, which helps lower emissions and noise during ground operations.
“Cebu Pacific fully supports Clark International Airport’s APU OFF initiatives as part of our commitment to more sustainable operations. By reducing our reliance on onboard power generation while aircraft are parked, we can help lower fuel consumption and emissions. We are proud to be the first airline to use this airport facility at Clark,” said Lei Apostol, CEB vice president for customer service operations.
LIPAD noted that the BME installation is part of its sustainability efforts to reduce fuel use, emissions, and noise at the airport.
“The operation of our new Bridge Mounted Equipment (BME) is inline with CRK’s commitment to a more sustainable operations and help our airline partners reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. We are grateful for Cebu Pacific’s support for this initiative,” said Noel Manankil, President and CEO of LIPAD.
The move follows CEB’s adoption of BME in Cebu in 2024, where it was also the first carrier to use the equipment. The airline has also deployed electric ground support equipment (GSE), ground power unit (GPU) and air-cooling units (ACU) at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), which helps reduce emissions compared and reliance on the aircraft’s APU when on the ground.
Through these efforts, CEB continues to work with airport partners to improve ground operations and reduce their environmental impact.
‘Bawat Hinga ay Mahalaga’ campaign call to recognize, act early vs. RSV warning signs
HEALTH experts warn about the burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in young children, highlighting the need for early detection and recognition of concerning symptoms.
In line with this, they launched the “Bawat Hinga ay Mahalaga” campaign launched on Friday, Oct. 16, to give renewed attention to RSV and the importance of seeking timely medical advice.
The discussion highlighted a nine-year case-series study that identified RSV as the most common virus detected among Filipino children below five years old who were hospitalized with severe pneumonia.
Through the campaign, families can turn awareness into responsible action: learn the signs of RSV, reduce exposure to respiratory infections where practical, and seek timely professional advice.
Babies under 6 months old are vulnerable to RSV
Dr. Anna Ong-Lim, current adviser and past president of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the Philippines (PIDSP), explained RSV is a contagious respiratory virus that poses a serious health risk to infants and young children in the Philippines.
“In a certain proportion of patients, you can actually develop problems like difficulty of breathing, coming from infections in the lung and pneumonia and this can lead to hospitalizations,” Dr. Ong-Lim said.
The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) Department of Virology 2024 Annual Report shows that RSV-related infections mainly affected children under two years old, with one in four reported cases occurring in infants aged five months and younger.
RSV affects the airways and lungs and may lead to serious respiratory illness, including pneumonia, in infants.
In the country, Ong-Lim said most of the patients are under the age of six months. “RSV is very common, with most children experiencing at least one infection by their second birthday,” Ong-Lim said.
The first infection may occur when a child is only a few months old, while the immune system is still developing, and infants have smaller airways that can become inflamed, which may contribute to more serious illness.
A year-round burden
Dr. Ong-Lim discussed RSV circulates every month of the year, and can affect individuals both in the outpatient setting, in the hospital and out detecting both severe flu and COVID-19 in severe disease.
Citing the RITM Department of Virology 2024 Annual Report, Ong-Lim said RSV is present every month but surges towards the wetter and colder months of the year: September to February.
Across the 2024 surveillance, RSV peaked detection in October to December. She added that there is also an overlap between RSV and flu detections once the colder and wetter months start.
Meanwhile, RSV strikes beyond the hospital, and outpatients with influenza-like illness can test positive from RSV. Ong-Lim said these patients have a 6% chance of being RSV positive.
“RSV presents with a spectrum of illnesses, can be mild and severe and is found all-year round,” she said.
Maternal immunization: Babies’ first defense vs. RSV
Maternal health expert Dr. Martha Aquino, president of the Philippine Infectious Diseases Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology (PIDSOG), discussed the importance of vaccination for pregnant women.
Aquino emphasized that maternal immunization or the administration of vaccines during pregnancy protects both the pregnant person and the newborn infant.
“When you introduce a harmless vaccine, it’s a part na nakikilala ng body natin pagka na inject, gagawa ng panlaban ang ating body sa kanya, eventually, dadami yun. Pag dumami siya, nandun yung inunan na nagde-develop, so mayroon siyang highway para ma-transmit papunta kay baby, that is what you call passive immunization,” Aquino said.
She added the Immunoglobulin G reaches the baby, developing ready-made protection from the antibodies it got from the mother.
“Automatic, mayroon na siyang protection laban sa sakit. Doon sa mga bakunang natanggap niya and long-lasting immunity na mayroon ang mommy na pwede niyang ipasa kay baby, hindi siya magta-take ng time para mag-develop ito kasi ready-made na siya,” Aquino said.
Published evidence notes that antibodies passed from mother to baby during pregnancy contribute to an infant’s early immune protection. But these antibodies naturally decline over the first months of life, hence young infants remain vulnerable to respiratory infections such as RSV.
Every breath matters: recognizing the warning signs of RSV
Dr. Catherine Joile Carelle Roux Ong, chair of the OB-GYN Tondo Medical Center and past president of Philippine Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine, discussed the warning signs of RSV.
Ong said possible symptoms in infants and young children include wheezing or unusual breathing sounds; fast, shallow, or labored breathing. It also includes low-grade fever, unusual irritability or fussiness, and reduced activity, lethargy, or increased sleepiness.
She added that warning signs also include poor feeding or decreased fluid intake of the baby.
“If you will look at the symptoms, it is not specific for RSV but more on respiratory problems, sa mga mommies wag na magpatumpik-tumpik you have to consult a doctor,” she noted that symptoms may vary, and a healthcare professional should assess any concerning change.
Ong stressed that the mothers should recognize that there is something wrong and bring the babies to the pediatrician.
“Karaniwang supportive ang pangangalaga sa RSV, kaya mahalaga ang maagang pagkilala at konsultasyon,” she stressed.
Simple habits to help reduce RSV exposure
Dr. Ana Belen Ignacio-Alensuela, board trustee of the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS), said good and simple habits help reduce RSV exposure.
Alensuela stressed that anyone can acquire RSV, as the virus can spread through respiratory droplets, direct contact with an infected person, or contact with contaminated surfaces.
Understanding how RSV spreads can help families follow practical measures that reduce exposure to respiratory infections.
Alensuela emphasized these include hygiene and sanitation practices, staying away from others when unwell, and following applicable public-health and clinical guidance.
“You can never tell who has the virus and there is no such thing as a high period of communicability because kahit early pa lang viral infections ng pasyente, pwede na yung makahawa,” she said.
Alensuela said every family can play a part in reducing exposure to respiratory infections.
Simple habits at home, including regular handwashing; covering coughs and sneezes, and keeping babies away from people who are unwell, can make a difference, especially for very young infants.
THE DEPARTMENT of Sciences and Technology (DOST) will hold its annual flagship event the 2026 National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (NSTW) in General Santos City from Nov. 25 to 29.
The five-day event will showcase DOST’s latest projects and technologies for solutions aiming to solve the needs of the everyday lives of Filipinos.
The 2026 NSTW will carry the theme “Science, Technology, and Digital Innovation: Driving Food Security, Sustainable Energy, and National Resilience,” focusing on science-based solutions for agriculture, energy stability, and climate adaptation.
“This theme is very appropriate as we are facing the challenge and effects of the ongoing, very strong El Niño. And I hope that our fellow Filipinos, especially the local government, will be able to attend and listen and explore the solutions relevant to the times,” DOST secretary Dr. Renato Solidum Jr. said during the 2026 NSTW media kick off.
DOST XII regional director Sammy Malawan noted that DOST has been supporting General Santos City by providing guidance, scientific recommendations, and bringing back its economic activity after it was recently hit by an earthquake.
Dubbed as the “Tuna capital of the Philippines,” Malawan emphasized that General Santos is also a booming city.
The city’s people and local government showed their resiliency along with the help of science to recover and rebuild.
Last June 8, 2026, a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck offshore near Sarangani which heavily impacted GenSan and triggered tsunami warnings.
The NSTW is an annual event of DOST to highlight Filipino research, inventions, and scientific breakthroughs in the Philippines. The celebration serves as a platform to showcase cutting-edge technologies and innovations to address real-world challenges.

DOST-FNRI survey: Davao Region struggles with double burden of malnutrition, targeted interventions pushed
A DEPARTMENT of Science and Technology–Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) survey pointed to a critical double burden of malnutrition, and rising overweight and obesity rates in Davao region
During the DOST FNRI 2025 Updating Survey Dissemination of the Nutritional Status of Filipino Children and Other Population Groups on Wednesday, Oct. 15, regional health, education, and social welfare officials stressed the need for localized interventions.
Mixed trends in child nutrition
Nutritional data released from DOST-FNRI assessment reveal encouraging improvements in stunting and wasting among children in the Davao Region, but concerns persist over rising overweight and obesity rates across older age groups.
For children under five years old, the prevalence of underweight in the Davao Region dropped from 17.9% in 2023 to 14.2%, falling below the national estimate of 16.2%.
Despite this decline, regional underweight status remains classified as medium in magnitude and severity.
Stunting among under-fives similarly decreased slightly from 28.1% to 25.2%, while wasting rates among young children also saw a reduction, dropping from 6% to 3.7%, placing the region at a low-to-medium level of public health significance that sits below the 5.1% national baseline.
Meanwhile, overweight and obesity among under-fives eased from 3.2% to 2.7%.
Among school-age children aged 5 to 10, underweight prevalence decreased from 20.6% in 2023 to 18.4% by 2025, but roughly one in every five children in this age group remains underweight.
Stunting for this demographic similarly declined from 24% to 19%, while wasting dipped slightly from 6.1% to 5.3%.
The data highlighted a concerning upward trajectory in over-nutrition as overweight and obesity rates among school-age children rose from 2023 levels to reach 14.1% by 2025.
DOST- FNRI said this pattern signals that excess weight concerns are emerging earlier in childhood.
Among teenagers and adolescents, stunting also saw a slight decrease from 23.9% to 22.2%, though it maintains a rate where roughly one in five adolescents in the region remains stunted.
Wasting among adolescents registered a significant improvement, falling from 8.6% to 6.7% positioning the Davao Region among areas with the lowest adolescent wasting prevalence nationwide.
Mirroring the trend seen in younger groups, adolescent overweight and obesity increased from 10.4% in 2023 to 14.4% by 2025.
Double burden of malnutrition, agency interventions
The Department of Health (DOH) XI warned that a double burden of malnutrition persists in Davao region, citing DOST FNRI 2025 Updating Survey.
The World Health Organization describes the double burden of malnutrition as the coexistence of undernutrition (stunting, wasting, underweight, or micronutrient deficiencies) alongside overnutrition (overweight, obesity, or diet-related noncommunicable diseases).
Mayflor Peralta-Espiritu, nutritionist-dietician of Department of Health (DOH) XI pointed out that stunting among children under five saw a decrease of 2.6% from the previous year.
Even so, one in every four children in the region remains stunted, which the DOH still considers a public health concern.
Espiritu also pointed to rising overweight and obesity among adolescents and adults.
She warned that without intervention these conditions could lead to non-communicable diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.
In addition, Reissa T. Silda, nutritionist-dietician of Department of Education (DepEd) XI noted that the double burden of malnutrition is evident in schools division in the region.
Silda said overall regional malnutrition rates decreased slightly from 15.20% last year to 14.84%, and overnutrition rates climbed from 5.89% to 6.13%.
Overnutrition increased mostly in city divisions, including Davao City and Panabo City, where both undernutrition and overnutrition went up.
She said Davao Occidental recorded the highest undernutrition rate, while Tagum City had the highest overnutrition rate.
She said the department has raised school feeding days from 120 to 200. A target of 220 days this school year was adjusted because of changes in the school calendar.
“We plan to add more physical activity to school programs and include tasks requiring physical exertion in learners’ performance assessments,” Silda said.
Parents are also urged to limit children’s gadget use and make time for active play at home.
Meanwhile, Espiritu said DOH is pushing for a life-course approach starting with maternal health in the first 1,000 days, alongside strengthened infant and young child feeding and dietary diversification initiatives.
She added the agency also provides technical assistance to local government units (LGUs) in using the survey findings to craft their local nutrition action plans to set priorities and resource allocations.
She cited that LGUs often do not use available data in their interventions, and that the survey should be treated as a practical guide for decision-making and not only as statistics.
She added DOH will work with the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the National Nutrition Council and the regional nutrition committee to assist LGUs that need guidance.
