A WOMAN was killed, and three others were injured after an out-of-control truck with failing brakes caused a seven-vehicle chain-reaction collision in Barangay Calinan on Friday afternoon, Aug. 28.
The incident occurred at around 5:50 p.m. at the corner of Magsaysay and Aurora Streets, involving a Fuso truck, four tricycles, and two private sedans.
According to a spot report from the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) Calinan Police Station, the Fuso truck (plate no. MBE3070) was traveling along Magsaysay Street toward Datu Abing Street behind a three-wheeled King 4S trike and a Kawasaki motorcycle with a sidecar.
The truck driver told investigators that his brakes suddenly malfunctioned, causing the heavy vehicle to crash into the rear of both tricycles directly ahead of him.
The impact propelled the Kawasaki sidecar into a Honda trike and a Honda Civic sedan. The truck then swerved left into Aurora Street, slamming into the front of an oncoming Rusi trike and another Honda Civic sedan traveling in the opposite direction from Datu Abing Street.
The Kawasaki tricycle driver and his three passengers sustained severe physical injuries during the crash.
Responding medics from Central 911 (Ambulance SA-09) provided emergency care at the scene before transporting all four victims to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) in Bajada.
In an update sent to reporters on Sunday, Aug. 30, the DCPO confirmed that one of the four hospitalized victims—a female passenger—succumbed to her injuries on Saturday, Aug. 29.
All seven vehicles sustained varying degrees of structural damage and have been impounded at the Calinan Police Station. The truck driver remains in police custody pending the filing of formal charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple physical injuries, and property damage.
