AUTHORITIES confiscated P14.6 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in an operation at 11:30 p.m. in Barangay Dumoy, Talomo District on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
The coordinated inter-agency operation resulted in the arrest of four suspects and the confiscation of 403 master cases of suspected smuggled cigarettes. The estimated street value of the illegal tobacco products alone reached P10,075,000.
In addition to the illicit cargo, authorities seized a Fuso truck, an Isuzu vehicle, and various cellphones. The total cumulative value of all confiscated properties and contraband was placed at P14,675,000.
The arrested suspects and the seized items are now under the custody of the CIDG Davao City Field Unit.
The CIDG XI, the PNP Highway Patrol Group, the PNP Maritime Group, and Police Station 17 of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) conducted the joint anti-smuggling operation.
LtGen Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., acting Chief PNP, affirmed the commitment of the police force.
“Operations like this attest to the dedication of our personnel in enforcing the law and protecting the welfare of the citizenry. We will continue to dismantle syndicates that damage our community and economy,” he said.
Meanwhile, BGen Randulf T. Tuaňo, PNP spokesperson, highlighted the effectiveness of the coordinated effort.
“This successful operation showcases the skill and coordination of our personnel. Smuggling severely affects livelihoods and government revenue, and the PNP will remain vigilant in defending the public interest,” Tuaňo added.
