ROUGH CUTS | Worth Meta’s takedown

A RADIO broadcaster was shot dead in Barangay Mangagoy, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.  As of press time, the police have yet to determine the motive of the killing.

Well, we have no doubt the majority, if not all, residents of Bislig knew the reason why the radio man was gunned down. Maybe it is only the police who do not appear to be knowledgeable. That is the reason they are investigating.

Ironically, the slain broadcaster known on air as “Boy Pana” was not given the courtesy by his killers of being slain with an arrow. He was killed with bullets.

Seriously, though, we are saying this because we were once a broadcaster. And if one radioman is worth his salt, the likelihood is that he or she will develop enmities with those affected by his tirades on air.

However, if one is fair, maintains some degree of self-restraint, and seeks to get the side of the concerned individual, the possibility of enmity may be avoided and a collaborative or professional relationship may even be developed.

Of course, it is a totally different story if one radio personality takes advantage of either or both of the subjects of his discourse.

Here we are reminded of the so-called AC/DC. It is all that matters for both print, broadcast journalists, and lately, social media trolls disguising themselves as vloggers.

Meta has reportedly taken down the Facebook Pages of 20 social media influencers for using the same platforms in promoting online gambling. The move by Meta came after thMist likely the PNP  advocacy group Digital Pinoys coordinated with the Philippine National Police’s (PNP’s) Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC). The Digital Pinoy was the one who submitted the list of social media influencers to the PNP unit, which acted on it immediately. The same unit most likely coordinated with Meta for the appropriate action necessary.

“Yes, their serving as purveyors of lies, pervasive disinformation, and misinformation is creating a climate of hatred among the partisans of this and that political group and personality”

Why not Meta also take down the FB pages of vloggers who are under the payroll of certain political groups or personalities? They are continuously spreading lies and other fake news for the benefit of their patrons.

It is our take that they are major instruments in the deterioration of the country’s economic and political stability.

Yes, their serving as purveyors of lies, pervasive disinformation, and misinformation is creating a climate of hatred among the partisans of this and that political group and personality. And sadly, many of them are in the service of people with the worst of intentions for their nemesis, using the welfare of the country as their supposed cause.

Reports emanating primarily from social media vloggers and the mainstream media, with the latter now appearing to be secondary sources only, said that groups identified with former President Rodrigo Duterte have conducted worldwide rallies demanding the immediate release of the former Chief Executive.

The former President of the Philippines is now a little over four (4) months in detention at a jail run by the International Criminal Court (ICC). He is currently facing accusations of having committed crimes against humanity.

If indeed the rallies were held worldwide and will continue until their objective is attained, will their magnitude or number of people and countries involved influence the ICC judges to decide on releasing the former Philippine leader? Will it not exacerbate the matter instead?

Frankly, we have no idea or would not even think the rallies will affect the ICC judges’ resolve to proceed with the trial. Just imagine the subtle intimidations done by the United States in the ICC’s efforts to pin down Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Nethanyahu for his alleged massacre of Palestinians in the early days of the still unfinished war with Islamic terrorist groups in the Gaza strip and in Lebanon?

The ICC has remained adamant on the US warnings. Now, will the Filipino-initiated rallies demanding the immediate release of the former President even make a small dent in the ICC judges’ tenacity?

“Let us to see.”

We cannot help but be happy with these two good news despite attempts to douse cold water in one of the two.

We are referring to the final pouring of concrete on a post of the Bucana Bridge by its contractor. The bridge connects the two sections of the Davao City Coastal Highway. The first section now completed is the one from Toril to Times beach up to the western side of the Davao River. The second section is from the eastern side of the same river up to Sasa passing through the Piapi shoreline then crossing over Sta. Ana wharf to Jerome beach area. The second section of the coastal road is about to be completed  with the bridge’s completion as one major phase of the accomplishment.

The other good news is that despite the Petition for the issuance of a Writ of Kalikasan, the construction of the Samal Island-Davao City Connector Project now claimed by the DPWH to be 40 percent done, still continues.

Davaoeños, especially the people of the Island City of Samal are hoping that there will be no more impediment in the bridge construction.
