A CRUCIAL intelligence tip from a former rebel has led to the discovery of a major New People’s Army (NPA) weapons cache in the mountains of Brgy. Balagnan, San Luis, Agusan del Sur.
The operation, conducted on Sept. 15, was a joint effort by the 8th Infantry “Dependable” Battalion, 43rd Military Intelligence Company, 4th Military Intelligence Battalion, 1st Special Forces BN, 26th Infantry Battalion, 88th Infantry Battalion, all under 403rd Infantry Brigade, and 4th Division Reconnaissance Battalion, of the 4th Infantry Division.
The recovered arsenal included a Barrett .50 caliber rifle, an RPG launcher, two AK-47 rifles, and an RPK magazine.
All firearms had defaced serial numbers, a common practice for weapons used in illegal and terrorist activities.
According to Lt. Col. Jeorge R. Jallorina, the acting commander of the 8th Infantry Battalion, the successful operation was a direct result of the cooperation between local residents and various Army units.
“The discovery reflects the NPA’s deteriorating state as our relentless joint operations continue to cripple their capacity to sow violence in Agusan del Sur,” he said.
Jallorina also used the opportunity to urge remaining NPA members to abandon their “futile struggle” and return to their families for a chance at a peaceful life.
