A 54-YEAR-OLD farmer was discovered dead inside a tunnel in Purok Pag-ibig, Barangay Saloy, Calinan District, on Saturday, July 26.
Authorities suspect the cause of death was suffocation due to gas buildup.
The victim, a resident of the area, was last seen by his wife and child harvesting cacao on Friday, July 25, around 9 a.m.He then proceeded to a nearby tunnel he had been excavating but did not return home that evening.
His family initiated a search the following morning, leading to the discovery of his body inside the tunnel.
Personnel of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Special Rescue Force, and Central 911 helped retrieve the victim’s remains.
Reports indicate that he had installed a gas-powered pump inside the tunnel to extract water.The equipment is believed to have led to the accumulation of carbon dioxide, a gas known to displace oxygen and impair breathing in enclosed spaces.
