THE BRAND of politics our self-important cast of lawmakers are presently playing is not for the faint-hearted, and those who feel enraged with the present goings-on should take heed.
In the first place, deliberately misinterpreting the Philippine Constitution to suit their agenda, just so it will apply only to one person, should be at the heart of that raging fire within.
Secondly, among the proponents of this malicious deed, in the guise of a fair impeachment proceeding directed at the sitting vice-president, are not even lawyers. In fact, one even stated on record that the law could be bent.
Third and last, throughout all the proceedings, the third branch of government, the Supreme Court, has noticeably been mum and unresponsive as though it were a mere observer.
Not only does this tell us where everything stands at the moment, it has given us the clearest hint yet as to how so very low Philippine politics has sunk with the present administration.
Though already a stale argument, some people still cling to the belief that at the bottom of all these, it is we, the electorate, who are at fault because we elected these people to their position.
They insist, “we are what we eat.” This line of thinking insinuates we Filipinos are poorly-informed voters who always choose the wrong candidates into office.
For those firmly set in the belief we deserve whom we put in office, if it were your candidates that won, and our roles were reversed, I wonder if you’d even be bold enough to call out their errors.
Perhaps the most insulting comment is directed at those less-fortunate among us. The politician’s mindset is the same: take advantage of their situation.
Their votes can easily be had for the grease money of just a thousand pesos during election campaigns.
There too are other critics and scholars who claim that the brevity of our collective memory dooms our choices. They insist we easily forget the crimes against us as a people by politicians-past.
These countless know-it-alls, most of whom are safely entrenched in some foreign land, pound that at us at every turn, especially when things go wrong or not their way.
They ask, as though it were the most important question…why do we always fall for the same trick every time, forgetting all that’s been done to us?
Going back to our distinguished and honorable solons, the die is cast. This time, you’ve not only turned your back on the rule of law. You’ve turned your back on the people whom you swore to serve.
When all hits the fan, and definitely, we will come to that, no amount of your money will save you from the fire you have started.
