SENATOR Christopher “Bong” Go welcomed the P 700 million allocation for the Mati Airport in Mati City, Davao Oriental, under the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) 2026 budget, describing it as a major step toward improving regional connectivity and tourism in the province.

Acknowledging the importance of the project, Go used the interpellation of the proposed 2026 budget of the DOTr on Nov. 27, 2025, to press for the sustained funding and continued implementation of the airport’s development and operationalization.

The senator emphasized that with the funding now in place, concerned government agencies must ensure that the project moves forward without delays to realize its benefits for Davao Oriental and neighboring areas fully.

Furthermore, Go, who serves as an ex officio member of the Mindanao Development Authority Board of Directors representing the Senate, underscored that Mati Airport will significantly help decongest the Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City by providing an alternative gateway to the region, while also cutting travel time for passengers.

Sana po’y tuloy-tuloy na rin po ang construction nitong Mati Airport na dati pa nating ipinaglalaban,” Go said, stressing the need to sustain government support until the airport becomes fully operational.

A Davaoeño with roots from Davao Oriental, Go noted that improved air access would significantly boost tourism and economic opportunities in the province, which is home to world-class destinations.

He previously identified Mati Airport as a priority infrastructure project during the 58th Araw ng Davao Oriental celebration on July 1 the previous year, calling on stakeholders to work together to maximize the province’s tourism potential. “Of course, with Mati Airport, we work together to develop tourism. Davao Oriental has a high potential,” he stated.

Furthermore, Davao Oriental boasts premier destinations such as Mount Hamiguitan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Dahican Beach in Mati City; and Pusan Point in Caraga, known as the site of the first sunrise in the Philippines.

With the PhP700 million allocation already secured, Go, as one of those who advocated for the funding, stressed that the focus should now be on efficient implementation, linking transportation infrastructure directly to tourism growth, job creation, and broader economic activity.

“Transportation has always been the backbone of our economy. It fuels economic growth, connects our communities, and allows our people to have access to education, work, and opportunities,” Go said.
