Davao City rushes aid to families displaced by Piapi fire

THE CITY Government distributed food and financial assistance to the victims of a massive fire that ravaged a riverside community in Barangay 21-C, Piapi Boulevard, on the evening of Oct. 2, 2025.

The fire, which began around 4:50 p.m., affected a total of 179 homeowners, according to records from the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).

Hot meals were provided to fire-affected residents of Barangay 21-C who are temporarily staying at the barangay’s evacuation sites.

Modular tents have been installed to accommodate displaced families, while a health station and a child-minding space have also been established for the residents.

Response teams from the City Health Office, City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), and other frontline agencies are currently on site to provide assistance and essential services to affected individuals.

 The CSWDO is likewise conducting an ongoing assessment of the affected residents.

No casualties were reported in the incident.

Damage and fire timeline

According to the blaze scorched an area estimated at 7,160 square meters, authorities estimated the damage to properties at approximately P1.79 million.

The Davao City Fire District successfully declared the fire under control (“fire out”) at 7:27 p.m.

The alarm timeline was recorded as follows:

  • 2nd Alarm: 5:03 p.m.
  • 3rd Alarm: 5:20 p.m.
  • 4th Alarm: 5:31 p.m.
  • Under Control: 6:30 p.m.

Senior Inspector (Sr. Insp.) Russell Jake Marañon, Davao City Fire District spokesperson and Toril fire Station chief, confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the blaze.

Cause and response

The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) reported that the fire started at the residence of Maria Fe Sare in Purok Sta. Cruz. According to SFO1 Rich Michael Gamot, the flames quickly spread to neighboring houses in the densely populated area.

The incident drew a rapid response from the Bangoy Fire Station, BFP Regional Office 11, the 911 Fire Brigade and Medical Ambulance, as well as various private fire volunteers.

The DCPO also determined the primary evacuation site for affected families and deployed personnel to ensure a smooth and orderly evacuation. 

The designated evacuation center is the covered court of Barangay 21-C, with the Punong Barangay of Barangay 22-C also offering their Covered Court as an additional center.
