DAVAO Region is emerging as the Philippines’ newest dive tourism destination, following the arrival of Thai dive operators who explored the region’s underwater sites and expressed strong interest in bringing in more tourists.

The visit was led by Christopher John Aquino, a Filipino professional diver based in Thailand, along with Thai dive centers and professional dive instructors, Matthew Pitchitphan and Ta from Let’s Dive Thailand and Forward Diving Center. The group conducted dives in Samal Island and Mati, praising the clear waters, vibrant marine life, and untapped potential.

“Samal is excellent for macro diving, while Mati offers stunning coral reefs and wide seascapes,” said Ta, one of the Thai dive instructors.

The visit was made possible by the newly launched direct Bangkok–Davao flight route, which significantly improves access for regional travelers.

According to Aquino, a typical four-day dive tour with 25 divers generates over ₱600,000 in local revenue, thereby boosting hotels, restaurants, and local dive services.

“This is a chance for Davao to tap into Southeast Asia’s growing dive tourism market,” he said.

Local dive operators are expected to benefit from the influx, as international guests rely on local guides for site knowledge and safety.

Stakeholders also stressed that Davao Region is safe for tourists, urging foreign governments to lift outdated travel advisories and support Mindanao’s tourism revival.

With its rich marine biodiversity, year-round diveable waters, and growing tourism infrastructure, Davao Region is positioned to become a key diving destination in the region.
