THE REMAINS of Lt. Col. Deozar Almasa have been turned over to his family after he was found dead in his quarters at the police barracks on Monday morning.

Police Regional Office (PRO) XI spokesperson Major Catherine Dela Rey said on Tuesday, Feb. 10, that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the official’s death is still ongoing.

The regional command launched the probe after Almasa was discovered inside his quarters at Camp Sgt. Quintin M. Merecido in Buhangin around 7 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 9.

PNP Director General Jose Melencio Nartatez, who happened to be in Davao City to visit the regional command on Monday, confirmed he was briefed on the incident immediately upon his arrival.

“I gave a directive to investigate because these things don’t just happen,” Nartatez told reporters during a press conference. When asked if foul play is suspected, Nartatez remained cautious, stating only that the incident is under active investigation.

In a statement released Monday, the PRO XI leadership expressed “sincere condolences” to Almasa’s family and colleagues. In honor of the fallen officer, the Philippine flag at Camp Merecido was flown at half-mast.
